this happened to me some ... 33 years ago .. HEY I WAS ONLY TEN....
I found a lady's purse in a large retail store ... it had the grand sum of $98.00 in it .. which at that time was over a week's pay for my mum ( not dad though ) ......
I showed mum and we took it to a sales counter and they took my details... a few weeks later a letter arrived in the mail and it was from the lady who had lost the purse. She thanked me and had included a $2.00 reward ..
there is NO way I wouldn't return the wallet ... keeping it KNOWING who it belongs to is so close to stealing it isn't worth debating the difference.

I would call the owner and return the wallet money, id and credit cards intact. It makes me feel better to do a good thing and ease someones anxiety than to be a thief.
I am so disappointed with some people's answers and hope if this should happen to them someone as honest as them goes and rips them off. Hope they enjoy it.
I have both found and lost a wallet in the past and thank goodness for some honest people left in this world. I got everything back and so did the person whose wallet I found. It never entered my mind to steal.

Usually i'd take it. But i once found a purse on a bus and it had £20 in it, i was just about to take it then i noticed a picture of a cute little baby in it and it broke my heart to think i was stealing from someone who had to provide for their child. I handed it in to the police station and it was a better feeling than any amount of money could give you.

If the owner's details are in it i'll look for the owner give it back to him/her.. no police involved..
but if the details are not there and it was lost in a store or a mall i'd give it to the security so they can deal with it.
If no details available i don't really know what to do with it maybe give it to the needy .. I know i won't feel right taking it for myself.

Without doubt, take it to the Police, telephone the owner and tell him what and where. Theft by finding is still theft.
Do unto others as you would have done unto you. I expect the finder would be rewarded anyway and though it would not be applicable in this case as the owner is known ,if it is not claimed it becomes legally yours

I would look for an ID and try to contact the owner, if I could not contact them then I would take it to the police and hopefully they could return it. I would never keep it for myself. That is stealing and I could never live with that.

RETURN the money to the owner. It belongs to him/her and just because they dropped or lost it does NOT make it someone elses money. Return it and you may very well get a reward.
