Gallant Belgium was a rally cry for British entrance into WW1.
Britain was confident that without the assistance of Great Britain France would fall to the Germans. The rapid development of the 2nd German Empire under Bismark and latter William II, gave Britain grave concern, especially when Germany started to build a fleet that reviled Britain's, and Germany's support of the Boer's in Africa split the once allies.
Germany had the ability to defeat France, even with Russias help, Britian feared the power Germany would have once France was conquered and now in possesion of France and the French Colonies around the world.

WW1 was the war of the mutual defensive pacts.
Austria-Hungary had an alliance with German and Italy. Serbia with Russia, and Russia with France.
Great Britian did not have an alliance with France at the begining of WW1, but they had an alliance of sort with Beligum. France's alliance with Russia brough France into the War,

Britian enter the war to defend Beligum knowing that it's involvment would not be limited to just Beligum. Britian felt that it would have an opportunity to end German influence in the Pacific, and secure the German colonies in Africa.

I think not.The English were at bay, they had thought the French would beat the Nazis war machine back. France was the stepping stone into Europe but, it surprised everyone when they surrendered.
Over 500thousand fled and run to England and started the Free French Fighters, along with England. Others became underground workers for freedom, some galently giving their lives.
After the fall of France the area was open. Belgium was full of free fighters also, forming an underground.
