Ok, so I'm showing my age here but i dont care... !
The 80's was a really diverse time for music with Heavy Metal, Ska, Hip Hop, New Romantics and just about every other genre taking a piece of the action.

My fav's were Madness, The Cure, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson & Level 42 (yes Level 42 ...i know but i was a teenager back then and didn't know any different !)

Simple Minds, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran were all favourites of mine although I have to admit I had a thing for Nik Kershaw too and Chesney 'the one hit wonder' Hawkes! What was I thinking!

I don't know if I can answer just one band, but I can tell you who wasn't, Winger. Also, last I checked the Beatles were broke up well before the 80's. Okay I will throw my ring into the hat and say U2 or R.E.M. but I also love The Cars, The Jam, The Police, Spandeau Ballet, Queen's 80's stuff, Run DMC, Men At Work, Duran Duran, Iron Maiden, Depeche Mode, Genesis, Guns N Roses, Metallica, Megadeth, The Pixies, Butthole Surfers, Ministry, Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division, The Alarm, 10,000 Maniacs, The Mission, The Beastie Boys, Roxy Music and the list goes on and on.

Wham, Duran, Spandau, Human league, Haircut 100, There were too many! the best music was the 80s, my very favourite band of all was Frankie goes to Hollywood, brilliant.

I think I just loved everyone I could never decide who my favourites were but at one time it was The Beat and Madness then it was Duran Duran & Human League.

Electric Light Orchestra, the best band of the 70s in my opinion, were still going strong in the 80s, so they get my vote.
