Eric Clapton is definitely up there in my top favourite.
Who comes to mind first as an exceptional lead guitarist, is Jimmy Page. If solo guitarist - might've been a different answer, but to me, Page took music to another level and I appreciate that kind of creativity in a musician, also in Jimi Hendrix, as mentioned above, and so many other amazing guitarists, it's hard to pick a fave, I don't have one, but Page comes to mind first.
