all the information I have found says anything from 1 month to 6 months! Anyone actually know for sure? I am only a full preconception vitamin but don't know how long I really need to take them

well here in Ireland there are even advertisements on the TV that tell you that whether you're pregnant, thinking about it or just sexually active, you should be taking folic acid...cause it means that if you fall pregnant (planned or unplanned) your body is fit+healthy enough to help the developing baby...you continue taking the folic acid for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy...your doc will either keep you on it or change you to something else after that stage.

It says on the packet (folic acid) that you should be taking it for 14 weeks before getting pregnant (at least).

I would start taking them from the time you go off birth control or at least 3mths before conception. Obviously you could fall pregnant before then but at least take Folate / Folic Acid to reduce the risks of neural tube defects like spina bifida.

Nothing is going to replace a healthy balanced diet and regular exercise though so make sure you are doing these things too. Make sure to continue taking folate for at least the first 3 mths of pregnancy too.

best of luck

I think you should take folic acid supplements for three months before getting pregnant and should continue throughout your pregnancy.

Prenatal vitamins? YES!
They are very good for you and will make your body strong for the baby! The sooner you start the better! My son was a total surprise . . but had I been TTC, I would have started the day I decided to start trying for a baby!
Heck, I'm not even pregnant anymore and I still take my prenatal vitamins .. they're very healthy :]
