No, not old fashioned...wise - you know that many of life's manual skills need to be learned regardless of technological advancements that do it for you - many of youngsters know nada about imagination, creativity, nor do they know much about survival without modern acoutrements....let us not forget exercise either....obesity in children is becoming an epidemic...daggum shame
My grandson got a laptop when he managed to maintain a high gpa for all his middle school years...the younger one has the same challenge facing him. They play on soccer and hockey teams which their Mom coaches
My grandaughters were G&T students also...and their moms have always encouraged physical activity; taught them the old way [and the new] and kept their childhood intact with minimal exposure to the negative things. The youngest, 17, is a crew [row] member, former dancer and gymnast. The eldest was into cheerleading, dancing, singing, writing music and maintains a healthy lifestyle.

Yes it is a tough time to be growing up. Our life was so much simpler I would not trade those memories for the world. We had a lot less advantages but a lot more fun I think. And less danger lurking everywhere. The computer has become a scarey place. Someone last night suggested sites for ll year olds to visit and my son saw some of the vilest porn out there. Will try to have that answer reported if I can find it again. No you are not too old fashioned, with stuff like that out there I wish we could take our kids back to that time dont you ?

Kids should learn the basics before moving on to other things. I'm surprised by the amount of people who don't seem to be potty-training their kids. Kids are 3 & 4 years old running around in diapers! The kids' fascination with computers instead of exercise is contributing to childhood obesity. How will these kids survive if all electronics are disrupted by terrorists? I've seen adults freak out when the power is off for a few months after a hurricane. How wll these kids react?

No, just the opposite. Kids need to be taught respect and responsibility. Not showered with games and toys costing hundreds of $$$. As for the computer and spelling, not to worry. My spelling was an embarasement all my life. when I got my computer and spell check it caused me to focus on it. Today I am a much better speller.

I am not a grandma but a mother, and I do see your point, however, one of the things that I mostly instilled into my son was education, learning the truth about Bible and Godly standards, and not getting involved in cliques at school, and to combine all of what I taught him into today's technology.
It appears to be paying off because he can do all the things you mention above, and he's an honor-role student. The difference between him and kids who like to "take the lazy way out" is that we study the Bible together and he applies Bible principles in his everyday life.
I think that's the biggest difference between "today's lazy kids" versus those that apply decent Bible principles in their lives; those that apply the latter seem to fair better. My son is, and those youths from our congregation do also.
The generations are-a changing, and for the worse. It's hard to raise decent kids with good, sound, and God-fearing morals in today's society; today's generation and they are getting much worse. I'm glad I had only one.

Some parents do seem to let their kids have electric baby sitters. But I have met young fathers who are so much more into their kids, girls and boys, than any other generation of American men I know of. They shop with them, change their diapers and pick them up at school.
It may be a trade off for the good. The is always velcro and spell check!

I totslly agree with you as my mum moans to me about our children this generation not doing the things they did as kids. I will say though i still follow some old traditions for my children who are 8 and 5 yrs of age. And that is kids should be seen and not heard. And on a nice day without fail i have sent them outside and they are cliaming trees and rideing there bikes. I am against playstation and xbox(mite i add they have both of them) It causes conflict and drives me insane with the wingeing . In saying that we have strict rules. But thanks for the remonder of what shud be happening now a days. Technology updateing is a pain in the ass isnt it.

Lol...
My little son is all of 5 and is already collecting toys for HIS son!!! We get into a toy shop & he goes, "Not for me, Mummy! For my sonny boy!"...Talk about growing tooo fast!!!
You're very right. Kiddies today are bombarded by toys & gadgets that are way past their years. Its up to us parents to hold our horses & teach them that hide & seek is much better than that darn play-station!
