If it is a crack rather than a stone chip then you should get it replaced, especially with the frosty weather now upon us. A cold snap could make the crack spread further.

A lot of people don't realise that the windscreen is actually an integral part of the safety in a car.

If you are fully comp you can get your windscreen replaced for about £50. Make sure that you check your policy as they will often state the company you need to use.

If not then look in the yellow pages under windscreen fitters, a local independant will be hugely cheaper than one of the nationals.

To pass an mot the windscreen needs to be clear and intact. In other words if the crack runs from one edge to another, then the car will fail the mot. In point of fact this is highly dangerous as the windscreen will not perform as it should in an accident.
If the crack does not run from one edge to another and it is not directly in your line of view then there should be no issue.
Check with your car insurance to see if you can claim for a no-fault replacement, normally you need to pay the excess but this is far cheaper then the actual cost of the windscreen.

Hi I have just had this happen to me. Phone your insurance people right away, you should have done this when it happened. I called mine, I am covered on my policy for the windscreen, you might have something to pay, just depends on your policy. Because the windscreen company's are so overloaded right now because of this happening to stacks of people, there is a delay in getting seen. I will have to wait till the end of this week. I have a mot to but because I have already got this booked and can prove that I have and they will go ahead with my mot. You need to cover yourself and talk to insurance and your mot centre they may delay the mot until your screen is ok. Its not at the moment. No matter where it is or goes, its cracked, the days are gone where they are gonna talk your word that one day you will get it fixed. The persons who's name is on the MOT could jeopardise their job by stating something false

You would need to speak to your glass company. You can find details on your insurance policy. Cracks are often not repairable as they go the full thickness of the glass. If its tiny, they may be able to do it, but get it done now before the really cold weather comes. If the screen freezes and then you heat it with your air blower, the screen may crack all the way up. (It happened to me) If you are fully comp, you probably wont have to pay for the repair. You can get the screen replaced, but they will charge an excess fee. Mine is £60.00 I think. Again, have a look on your policy.

Generally a crack is irreparable, unlike some stone chips. Check your insurance, you may have windscreen cover and only need to pay any excess. If not, try ringing some local windscreen replacement places for a quote. You might visit one anyway, to see if there is anything they can do with your damage.

Check your insurance policy, if your fully comp you should be covered to get the crack repaired/windscreen replaced. Do it now before it get bigger, and goes into your line of sight causeing an MOt fail.

Quite often local supermarkets have free windscreen fixers on site! And often your windscreen can be replaced free via your insurance. If the crack is in the drivers eyeline, you need to get it done pronto though as that is something that will fail on MOT too and isn't too safe.

Most car insurance covers windscreen repair at no cost, you only pay the excess for complete replacement. Ring-up the nearest windsreen repair company and ask them for a basic quote and confirmation re insurance.
