Michigan is cold, so maybe they're coming in for the winter.

Roaches are nocturnal, they are most active during the first 4 hours of lights out. If you see a roach during the daytime then you might have an infestation, cuz they usually only come out at night.

Before you get an exterminator, make sure it was a roach, lay a stickly roach trap out over night in the vicinity of where it was supposedly sighted.

Open the cabinet under the sink. Where the drainpipe penetrates the cabinet, spray some insecticide. I prefer Home Defense. For the rest of the area I would suggest roach hives. They are the safest option when children are around.

You can wait for awhile before calling the exterminators, keep up the good hygeine, and review Community Guidelines about cursing on Yahoo Answers.

Most houses have roaches...some just have more than others. If you live in the South...even the nicest houses have roaches.

Luckily my current house doesn't have many roaches. I have a plastic one named Larry though. I put him in my medicine cabinet... I figure if guests are snooping in my stuff, they might as well come face to face with Larry! What did they expect to find, anyway?!

Better hope it wasn't a female with an egg in her! Start by getting some roach traps and place them near or around where your mom saw it. Hopefully it goes for it.

A rule of thumb, if you SEE one roach you got 10.
Yes, the official "cocka rocha" calendar says t is time to come inside. NOT that they need an invitation mind you, it just more comfortable.

As to your VISITING niece:? I must assume either you or your mother don't like her very much. You see ONE roach and off with her head- SAD.

So lets see how this ONE roach got from her obviously filthy house-(heavens knows YOU ain't got no bugs) to your house.

It came in on that birthday cake that she brought with her-EWWWW!.

Okay, she carried it inside her shoe, were the cocka rocha was hiding, just BARELY in front of her big toe, and crawled out once it seemed it was safe to do so.

OR, MAYBE, she was infested with them from the start-low class relatives and all-and they came in on her clothes and decided to stay in your prestine clean, anti-septic home(as opposed to going back to that dirty place from which they came-HMMMM! Decisions Decisions.

Call the bug man it and get over it.

eeeck, burn the house down, I can't deal with roaches!
The only way I have been able to get rid of roaches in our rental houses (it seems like all renters have them) is to hire an exterminator! Everything else is a waste of time!
