Who is the best CENTER in the NBA and why?

Dwight Howard. If the pre-season has been any indication of where Dwight's ceiling is, he has busted through the roof. There were jokes all summer about him working with a shooting coach and jokes aside, the big man has developed a nice 12- to 15-foot jumper, and a nice free throw stroke to go with it. In his first four pre-season games he's averaged better than 56% from the field, he has knocked in 20-of-25 from the foul line, logged two 30-point games, and is averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds in pre-season action. Imagine what the regular season will bring?

The quick answer is Yao Ming who has developed into a dominant force down low for the Houston Rockets. His capable skill set coupled with his tremendous height is unmatched. Of course if Amare Stoudemire is considered a center, Yao would be ranked second. Although Yao has begun to put up gaudier numbers than Stoudemie, he doesn't come close yet to what the Phoenix Suns' big man has done in the postseason.

Yao Ming. In an era where there are not many dominant centers, Yao is one of the few. He scores, rebounds, and passes the ball well...he not only puts up big numbers, he does it efficiently. When people talk about franchise centers, Yao is the kind of player they have in mind.

How can you leave Tim Duncan off this list? If you're asking who is the best true center today then it's got to be Yao Ming. I see Dwight Howard, Amare Stoudemire, and Tim Duncan more as tweener power forward - centers. They are used at center because they happen to be the team's most talented and physical big men but they aren't the conventional 7-foot and over players you've seen in the past. If you're talking about the best center (regardless of height) in the NBA today then Duncan should be mentioned because he is the best outta the bunch. You can't prove it anymore than 4 championships, a couple of MVP awards, and numerous NBA All-Defensive 1st Team selections.

Amare is a beast, but Dwight is a monster. I'd take Dwight Howard to be on my team over stoudemire. Yao is a very good too, but just can't seem to stay healthy, he can't run much either, so on conditioning amare and howard beat him there. On scoring and defense, well yao beats them there.

I say Amare because he is in a better team and Nash makes him better. He would get no attention or hype if we were in the Pacers like J. O'neil. But Honestly 07-08 is Howard's year of domination in the center position. Just you watch!

well amare is more a power forward not a center so it is between yao and d.howard.
i think d.howard is the best pure center we have had in the nba since shaqs rookie year. by far

definitely, yao. all 3 can dominate the paint, but unlike amare and howard, yao can shoot from the perimeter - that's what makes him better.

to answer your question, the best center is definitely yao right now.

in the near future, it's gonna be howard. or amare, if he learns to play defense. sorry portland, but oden = bowie.
