For yourself bring toiletries (tooth brush, deoderant, etc), clothes to come home in. Bring some pants with elastic in the waist because in case you have to have a C-Section you won't want anything tight against your tummy. Bring an extra pillow. If you're into cross words or puzzles bring that (or your iPod or whatever entertains you). A camera, a nursing night gown (or a regular one if you choose not to nurse) and a nursing bra. A robe. Slippers.
For your baby: 2 changes of clothes as well as the outfit you are going to bring him home in. Thick blanket, a hat. The hospital will provide diapers for you there. Mine did. Also, if you're going to feed the baby formula. bring some powdered formula and bottles. (I breast fed so I'm not sure if the hospital will send formula home with you. You may want to call ahead and check). Wipes. Pack a diaper bag as if you were taking your baby out with you. Also, go ahead and put the car seat in the car now so you don't have to worry about it later. Get one of those newborn neck supports that go in car seats so your baby's head isn't bobbing from side to side. If you can't afford one then a small baby blanket can do in place. I think they're like $20 @ Babies R Us. And the sun screen for the window.
Also, just a reminder but I would go ahead and register at the hospital you plan to deliver at. In case you haven't already. Congratulations!!

Bring personal care items: a comb, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and of course your lipstick and a little makeup.
You might want to bring a nice bed jacket too (something that makes you feel pretty), but whatever the hospital gives you to wear will do just fine since you're not going to be in the hospital for very long.
Bring a change of clothes for you to wear going home.
For the baby you'll want things that will keep him/her warm: undershirt or nighties with feet in them; a diaper or two; a little cap for his/her head; and a baby blanket. While you and baby are in the hospital, the hospital will supply all this until you go home.
It used to be that women were kept in the hospital for sometimes up to two weeks. If the birth has been normal, then you can expect to go home in about 3 days. So don't bring lots and lots of stuff because you'll just have to cart it all back home with you.

I packed 3 different small backpacks. In the first I had everything I wanted for labor. I was planning on doing it natural...so I had my IPOD and player (battery operated) with special music set up on a play list, I got a battery operated aroma therapy diffuser and packed that with my specially brewed labor oils, extra batteries, my own gown to labor in (keep in mind that this will be thrown away after birth if you go natural...it will be ruined), Bottles of water because I am finicky and didn't want to risk I would hate their water, a list with all the phone numbers of people that needed to be called once the baby was born or during labor to get to the hospital (just in case cell phone died!), my birth plan, and I think that was all.
In the second bag I had what I would need for the hospital stay, clean pajamas, slippers, toothbrush, toothpaste, brush, ponytail holders (several because I tend to loose them), a book, my own pillow (not really in the bag but in the car), Bra, an outfit to wear home, Robe, and extra panties.
Bag 3: Baby bag...outfit to wear home, blanket, jammies. The hospital gives you diapers, wipes, binkys, formula and nipples (if you bottle feed). So the bag comes home full but goes in pretty empty.
Good Luck!!

For bub: depends on what the hospital provides - some provide diapers/nappies, baby clothes etc. You'll have to give them a call to check - some don't provide anything!
For yourself:
* maternity pads. A couple of packs. The thin ones are nice but if you need stiches the padded ones actually provide a bit of softening when sitting! I got one of each because I wasn't sure which to get.
* something to eat (candies that are just sugar etc) and drink during/after labour. I had my son at 2am and there was no other source of food until morning!!!
*clothes/pjs for the stay (again depends on how long you're going to be there - I recommend enough of a couple of days and your partner/mum can bring you anything else), toothbrush, other toiletries etc.
* a support person to be there to hold your hand

Slippers and socks, a robe of choice, all your toiletries, cream, good bra, sweats to wear home, breast pads, large pads, I ended up needing a little cash because I wanted to get bottles water and a bagel, and anything for the birthing part of it that you want. For baby, mine were both Dec.. babies and I had there outfit to wear home, 2 blankets for then and one to cover the car seat. Some onesies if you like, and a camera of course. I tell you the hospital has tons of stuff for you and baby so if you forget they do a great job of having it for you. By the way my room had a DVD player so I brought my fav Xmas movies.

take 3 changes of clothing for the baby....yea you guessed it boy and girl. and something white and cute. hospital pics you know. other then that when i had mine back in 92 they had these panties that would hold that humongous pads for afterwords when you are still bleeding. never did use my own underwear i just used theirs. maybe a nice robe or gown if you want to look cute when company comes. i was ok with the hospital gown and another gown for a robe. toothpaste, hair shampoo, deorderant, perfume, beauty stuff , soap, toothbrush. camera (disposible), cell phone charger, gum, or a little bag of candy, perhaps. slippers dont forget the carseat they did check a million times to make sure i had mine. hairbow for the new baby girl? just think about what you would want after a long workout or overnight trip and then think what you want when everyone in your family shows up. that's probley what you need.

somethings will be avail to u depending on where you live but OK, here goes:
newborn sleepers & bodies (one for each day you have in hospital)
baby mitts so baby doesnt scratch himself
baby hat
newborn diapers (usually given)
pj's for you (I prefered 2 piece so I could easily breastfeed, walk around the corridors, have visitors etc)
bathrobe, slippers (in some older hospitals you have go down the hall to the shower!)
extra large/maternity maxi pads (usually given)
dispoable underwear (u g)
LOTS of magazines, books etc - baby usually sleeps lots the first 48 hours so I was BORED!
1 special baby outfit: a photographer may come around...
towel (not all hospitals provide them)
toilettries
If you are without a bag things for the baby can be provided by the hospital, they are used to impromptu arrivals :)

Comfy Jammies, Maxi pads youll hate the ones they give you in the hospital, they are the size of diapers. Hair brush, Shampoo conditioner and moisturizing body wash. Toothbrush, toothpaste. Supportive bra, if you are going to nurse get a nursing bra. Boredom buster like a book or puzzle book. Extra underpants you will need them. Extra gown you will need it to.
for baby, Outfit or two for pictures, outfit to come home in to include hat and socks. Baby nail clippers they will not do that in the hospital because they consider it a surgical procedure. Dont forget the car seat to take baby home in. and an extra duffle bag to carry home all the gifts the baby will get. Unless you are luck enough to get people to wait till you get home for the gifts. I wound up giving lots of flowers and stuffed animals to the childrens ward because if I took them all home I would not have been able to fit the car seat in the car.
