Though it's been said before, I'll say it again. It's not so much that a totalitarian state WILL emerge, but it will be able to emerge.
Look at history. The first thing that a government will do when it wants to run rampant will be to disarm it's citizens.
The armed civilian is the final check of power when the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of government get out of control. For a lot of gun owners, they don't own a gun just because they can. Personally? I own a gun because I feel it is an obligation to my security and freedom. I believe I have the right to feel safe.
For all the democrats out there... The man who is printed on your ballot sheet, Thomas Jefferson, was one of the biggest gun advocates in history. He, a liberal, understood the necessity of the armed citizen to a free society. A man for a citizen who was more powerful than his government. How did that translate into the new democrat agenda of more government and more gun control?

The idea isn't that a totalitarian regime WILL emerge, but that if the civilians are unarmed such a regime CAN emerge relatively unopposed. The idea is that an armed populace cannot be easily subjugated since they possess the capacity to fight back. It is a valid idea in the abstract.
Gun control is not effective at preventing crime. I live in a city that has been the murder capital of North America. There is quite a bit of gun control, all it changed was the murder weapons, it didn't reduce the murders.
I'm not a gun nut, but I do believe that law abiding citizens should be able to own firearms for hunting and recreational target shooting without being treated like criminals.

Hmmmmmm, maybe the presence of the US military in Europe, since WW ll had something to do with that.
Because sure as shootin, totalitarianism sure seemed to flourish in Europe, before US troops were permanently stationed there.

I repected Rohacks answer somewhat.... Truth is "We The People" (Citizens of the USA) have the right to "keep and Bear Arms"~!!!!!!!
ie, We can use guns not only to hunt but also to protect ourselves, property and family...... If you try to take my right You will feel my defience!!!!!... God be with you...
PS... The Western European Nations have and continue to be protected by us "Gun Toting Americans" We're a good ally for those being abused by theirs or other Governments but those folks need to take a stand! They may not have the protections under their laws that we do, so they may or may not be able to remedy the situation in thier countries but, as for the USA----- We have the RIGHT to KEEP and BEAR arms...... period! and the world in general is a better place for it!

I think it is dangerous to not be allowed to own a gun. In areas like Chicago, the only people with guns are the criminals, and they are taking advantage of an unarmed public.

You're speaking obtusely. The argument is that unarmed citizens are more easily taken over by a tyrannical government. It's not a prediction, its like saying lock your car doors if you park in the ghetto.

If YOU don't want to own a gun, don't buy one. If you know anything about history, you would know that before WW2, Europeans were stripped of their guns. That's what made it so easy for them to be over run by Hitler and Mussolini.
Trying to associate American Second Amendment to the social structure of foreign countries is not a valid comparison.
But don't worry, when the next civil war happens, those of us who value our right to protect ourselves, will fight for those like you, who don't.

I will be happy to mail you a "No Guns In This House" sticker to place on your mailbox and / or front door. It's absolutely free, if you promise to put it up in a visible place. That way the predators will know which home to invade without having to worry about possible on the job injuries.
