Its no real problem. You will need what is called a "Cross-over" ethernet cable to communicate directly between computers.
Once the crossover cable is connected, you should be able to connect each machine to the other's network shares.

You should manually set the IP addresses for each machine.
192.168.1.1 on one and 192.168.1.2 on the other. (be sure not to try using the same address on both an be sure to you set everything to the same range except the last number!) Just leave the gateway and dns blank since you are not trying to use the internet. You can do that from the control panel, network connections screens.

If you want a quicker transfer get a USB cord between them. Most ethernet adapters are 10/100, USB is 480Mbs. If you have 10/100/1000 adapters then ethernet will be quicker!

You can use Microsoft's tutorial for moving data (its built in in Vista.) http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/easytransfer.mspx

you'll want the two a router of a hub. Ethernet to Ethernet or workstation-to-workstation isn't supported by utilising present day ethernet enjoying cards, and in the previous days you had to do it by utilising utilising serial port, which a workstation does not have. a prevalent vast call community will encompass the two the workstation and workstation being related to the known element swap somewhat of them being related to one yet another. yet another determination is that if the workstation helps instantaneous, instantaneous enjoying cards DO generally help a workstation-to-workstation connection for document transfers, and that function is built-in into XP SP2 and Vista, and could nicely be activated by utilising double clicking your community notification icon on your activity bar tray, and then following the concepts there. the faster answer stated a crossover cable. this won't artwork VISTA to XP. The Vista device won't see the XP device, and Microsoft has in no way patched this trojan horse, and that i don't be attentive to of any artwork around offhand.
