@ Bruce H: I agree: Most mercaptanes smell awful

My favourite is skatol (3-Methylindol) , it occurs naturally in feces and its not so toxic as other compounds like pyridine which smells terribly too (especially and old and often used bottle)

Try methyl mercaptan - it's the stenching agent they use in LP Gas. Absolutely reeks at < 1 part per million and stays with you. It's similar to the active in skunk juice.

Another choice could be allyl isocyanurate (mustard oil). Spray it around, but don't get any in your eyes or breathe it - stings like a biatche.

when an oily food, such as butter, edible oil, turn rancid (become oxidized, either by oxygen from air or by water), a strange and unpleasant smell appear.

The unpleasant smell mainly contribute by butyric acid (CH3CH2CH2COOH), also call n-Butanoic acid. It is not toxic too. Some other unpleasant smell substance, such as H2S is bad for health.

There are some organic compounds that have some awful smells...like the smell of rotten meat. Hydrogen sulfide is pretty bad too.

I would vote for Carbon Disulfide (CS2), but H2S is also pretty bad. However, H2S is toxic, so it's not a good idea to spray it at people.
