cardiac muscle contracts because it contains specialized cells called autorhythmic cells which are found on SA node and AV node. these cells enable the hart to ontract even without nervous stimulation. there is however, involvement of the smpathetic and parasympathetic nervous system.. but it only participates in the rate of heartbeat or how fast your heart would beat given a certain situation.
you also have other specialized structures in the heat that enable the rhythmic contraction of the heart, like your bundle of His and purkinje fibers

The first answer... no clue how part of the digestive system pertains to your question, but the functional syncytium is right. Because the heart is an interconnected system of muscle cells... when one cell is electrically stimulated it spreads to its neighboring cells thus causing the heart to contract!
