Both stand up as great pieces of music and are difficult to compare. I personally prefer Ravel's "Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte" because of its haunting atmosphere (if it's played right)
If you like these have a listen to Melodia Africana by Ludovico Einaudi. I think you will enjoy it.

I prefer Pavane for a Dead Princess by Ravel. As someone else said, I love its haunting atmosphere. The piece is also [somewhat] less overused. I have played the original version on piano before, and now (once again, like someone else) I am playing it on cello in an orchestra. For some reason the bassoonists are having major difficulties.

I was going to try and give a definitive answer but I absolutely cannot. These are two of the most popular pieces in the literature and for ONCE, I can't say that it's undeserved. Both are near and dear to my heart.
At my wedding (I'm a musician and forced several of my friends to play for me) we used the Debussy as part of the prelude music and the Pavane as one of the processionals. Everyone thought I was a little crazy, I think, for using such a melancholy piece as part of a wedding. Actually, one of my friends playing asked me if I was being forced into an arranged marriage. :)

Both! I'm actually playing "Pavane" in my orchestra right now, and have played it in the past. But I must admit that the Debussy is truly a work of unique genius. There's something so free about it and life-embracing about it. Yet the "Pavane" is also a work of great beauty, and written for orchestra, which I like

I would be happy to listen to either of them but draw the line at doing it for a dead Princess and I definately would not sit next to Ravel - I hate their shoe designs !

That's tough. It would depend on my mood. I would probably usually end up choosing Clair de lune.

I've only heard Claire De Lune, but I'll get back to you on that one. Claire is one of my favorites though along with raindrop prelude and fantasy impromptu.
