it seems that in most episodes he only wants to hurt him not to eat the mouse

LOL! I never thought about that before... I think Tom just wants to hurt him for fun. I think if he really badly hurt Jerry, he'd be upset.

Haven't you ever seen a real cat catch a mouse, and it has the whole mouse in its mouth except for the little tail that still sticks out, squirming around...? And then it lets it go so that it can chase it some more...? It is only after the mouse is exhausted and can't run any more or is too petrified with fright and gives up that the cat finally bites its head off and eats it. I think it has something to do with the adenaline that makes it taste better, but you'd have to ask Ted Nugent about that.

Tom, is doing his duty as a cat, and trying to rid the house of rodents. Jerry just happens to be an extremely clever mouse, so Tom is having a hard time of it. Real cats don't play with their prey to be mean, its instinct. It is because cats cannot see directly in front of their noses. Since they can't see if the prey is stunned enough, they risk getting bitten or scratched by the prey. So, they beat the prey to an almost unconscience state, and then can move in for the kill bite, (at the back of the neck, severing the spinal cord.) without fear of retaliation from the prey.

LOL, this is great! I'm 56 and I love the 'old' cartoons! Even my mom, who was 86 before she passed away, loved to watch Tom & Jerry!
I think he is doing his natural instincts as a cat, but wouldn't really hurt him and cause his death in the long run... Who else will he "play" with? Great question! Best wishes!

I think sometimes he would put Jerry in his mouth, so I guess he wanted to eat him. Mostly it was revenge, and Jerry started it.

He just wants to ruff him up a little. If Tom ate Jerry then he would lose his interactive play toy. He simply wants to keep him from escaping.
