Different things work better for different people-look for a smoking cessation clinic in your area-the American Lung Association can tell you or it may be in the yellow pages.
They are experts at determining what the most effective techniques will be for you in particular. Chantix IS a very effective medication but doesn't work well for certain smokers-go to the pros for the best chance of success.
Good for you and good luck!

Quit a Lot... quit everyday - and when you fail, don't worry - just quit again. If you don't smoke for one full day it's a lot better than if you did. So you have to experiment with quitting and don't be down on yourself when you fail. One idea is to get some chewing tobacco - Beachnut. That's mild tobacco leaves, and you could chew that like gum when you can't take it anymore. The big trick with quitting cigarettes is to quit the whole business of buying a new pack - lighting up - putting them out. The less of this you do the better. And a little chew of tobacco once in a while is probably about 1/100th as deadly as the cigs - they truly are incredibly poisonous. Later I doubt you'd have much trouble stopping the chewing tobacco. I've also heard there's drug that really help people - not quite sure what they do - but a visit to the doctor would tell you. I've heard this will help LIFETIME smokers to quit right away!! Amazing. There's those patches which give you nicotine, but a package of chewing tobacco would be a lot cheaper. The trick is somehow get OUTSIDE the whole addictive process of buying and lighting cigarettes. One Big help is that cigarettes are so expensive now you just about have to get a loan to buy a pack - that probably makes people cut down a lot. When I was in college, cigs were 35 cents a pack - in the machine! I don't think they even have machines anymore.

I agree , try the patch . I'm 54 years old & have been smoking 40 of those years . I now have COPD ( chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ) . It's like slowly smothering to death . Do whatever you have to do . I'm finding the patch works tremendously , but it's the habit of lighting up , holding it , blowing it out , etc. that I'm having a hard time with . I've just started a support group - DoOrDieNow@yahoogroups - join us . We can use all the help we can get ! Good luck

Definatley try the patches and try and set up weekly visits with a nurse at a health clinic, then you are answerable to someone you don't know.
