Hey Mancunian Driver, we had the ruler and strap too. Must be a northern thing. They used to throw the blackboard rubber at our heads. The teacher was a very good shot. I was once tied to my chair in primary school, I was only four. I wouldn't sit down and kept running around in the classroom and that was in a church school. Wouldn't happen today, but mind you, there is little or no discipline in schools these days. That's why the kids give everyone grief and mouth, especially the teachers, poor souls and there is nothing they can do about it. I believe the laws may be changing now, anyone else heard about that?

Caned once for 'kicking' the next lad in school assembly. That was in 1953, - 11 years old.
Prior to that I had the 'ruler' ac cross my hands in junior school. I can't remember now what it was for.

The hierarchy of punishment was:-
lines x 100
lines x 500
stand outside the classroom door
detention (dete) x 1 hour
detention x 2 hours
cane x 1 stroke on each hand
cane x 3 strokes on each hand
expulsion (exclusion).
These punishments were administered without reference to parents.
If two boys were fighting, the Sports Master made them go into the boxing ring for 3 x 3min rounds, in order to sort out their dispute.
That was a grammar school in the 1950's.
There were some great Master's too.

Dickie (Physics)
Josh (Chemistry)

I was never actually caned, but I only just got away with it and most times I couldn't believe I had! Times I was close to being caned include when I skived off every PE lesson for an entire term, when I was smoking in the corridor before home time (too windy to light up outside!) and when I dyed my hair blue. I basically got away with it through sheer bravado and TOTAL denial of the offences.

At Primary school I was caned mostly for fighting and once trapping a snotty little boys head in his desk, three on each hand.. Also got it for throwing an inkwell at the teacher, her white blouse was ruined, six on each hand (school record). We had many a battle and I was once locked in a cupboard till the headmaster came. Chucked a bowl of egg custard at a dinner lady because she insisted that I used my right hand to eat with although I'm left handed, caned again. What do I do now? I teach of course.

For not producing work of the quality I was capable of I was put on report - twice, a caning followed as a result of this. This would have been about 1965 ish. Was it violence? No. has it harmed me psychologically? No. Did it teach me to respect authority and do the work I was supposed to? Yes it most certainly did. Did my school have the problems with behaviour and performance that seems to be the norm today? No. Does that tell anyone anything?

Paddeling continues to be utilized in some colleges in some states contained in the U. S.. colleges the position it truly is used and used properly have chanced on the students a lot less unruly, although, the danger that some bonehead instructor will abuse it truly is giant. perchance the father and mom go with to commence taking administration at homestead and then the colleges would not locate it this style of complicated pastime. this entire "all and distinctive is a winner and each and everything you do is fantastic" cultural style is lengthy late to be wiped out. It created no longer some thing yet self absorbed those who sense the international owes them each and everything. If father and mom should be father and mom and in no way pals to their youngsters, then we should be more suitable suitable off and the colleges should be an area to study and strengthen fairly than an area to go away your toddlers to be babysat for the day.

Faraway friend, in the Motherland our ways are not as English ways. Here we use canes or birch sticks to instruct schoolgirls, poets and such weak creatures only.

As for myself, as a young boyar I told a shameful joke once, most unwisely within my schoolmaster's hearing. Straightaway was I led to the school pillory, there stripped naked, bound and sentenced: 666 strokes with the bullwhip for unseemly speech. Quite stoically I endured some 300 strokes as my schoolmates cheered and my blood pooled deeply on the cobblestones. To be brief, mid-way through punishment I expired most miserably, leaving the giant Moorish whipper only a corpse to flail...

Now as oupyr, as Wurdelak I live but do not live; here amid wide forests always hungering for companions, lonely travelers...
Such are the ways of justice and punishment in the Motherland.

As a girl I wasn't caned but I did get a ruler across the hand when I was caught bunking off and smoking..............

amazing how it was the norm to us in those days, when teachers now have very little power over thier pupils for fears of losing thier jobs (or being had up in court)

It never did me any harm, but I learnt respect, which is sadly lacking these days

We had a strap , not the cane and it was usually for something fairly harmless , but it did teach us discipline ... I think !!
I don't particularly want schools to revert to these practises again as I feel that some teachers liked the opportunity too much , but I appreciate that they have a very difficult if not impossible job to retain discipline nowadays
