if a star is 47 light years away it took 47 years for the light to travel from that star to reach us ?

do have it right ? I'm trying to learn it the easiest way

Perfect!

A light year is the distance light travels in a year. It takes light 1 year to travel a light year.

Yes, you're right. So you can see that a light year - 6 trillion miles approximately - is a very, very large distance in human terms. To give you some ideas of scale:

The nearest star to us( after the sun) is just over 4 light years away.

Our galaxy is 100,000 light years in diameter.

The nearest large galaxy to ours is over 2 million light years.

Light year is the distance that light travels in one year.
It's about 9.46*10^12 km
