890 ($6.00) + X($4.00) = $6000
X = 165
So 165 matinee tickets were sold.

Let y=total revenue from ticket sales
If m=matinée tickets sold and r=regular tickets sold....

y=4m+6r

We also know that r-m=890 because the difference between regular and matinées sales is 890. Rearrange to get:

r=890+m

Substitute...

y=4m+6(890+m)

6000=10m+5340

660=10m

m=66

r-66=890

r=956

m = # of matinee tickets sold
r = # of regular tickets sold

Main part is to determine the equations that need to be solved based on the problem:
Equation 1: r = m + 890
Equation 2: $6r + $4m = $6000

Substitute for r in equation 2 and solve for m:
$6(m+890) + $4m = $6000
$6m + $5340 + $4m = $6000
$10m + $5340 = $6000
$10m = $660
m = 66

To check, solve for r in equation #1, then plug in r and m in equation 2:
r = m + 890
r = 66 + 890
r = 956
$6r + $4m = $6000
($6 x 956) + ($4 x 66) = $6000
$5736 + $264 = $6000
$6000 = $6000

4m + 6r = 6000
m + 890 = r
so substitute
4m + 6(m+890) = 6000
4m + 6m + 5340 = 6000
10m = 660
m = 66

The other answer did not do 890 more

4x + 6(890) = 6000
4x + 5340 = 6000
4x = 6000 - 5340
4x = 660
then divide by 4
x = 165

x = no. of matinee tickets sold

$4.00x + $6.00(x + 890) = $6,000.00
$4.00x + $6.00x + $5,340.00 = $6,000.00
$10.00x = $660.00
x = 66

Answer: 66 matinee tickets were sold.

Proof (total sales is $6,000.00):
= (66 * $4.00) + ([66 + 890] * $6.00)
= $264.00 + (956 * $6.00)
= $264.00 + $5,736.00
= $6,000.00
