Do or do not. There is no try.
sorry just one of my favorite sayings.
You can do anything you put your mind to, just stick to it. Don't let your self-defeating voice or anyone else get in your way. Each situation is different, but if you know you can do it or you have a passion for it, just keep that initial feeling in your mind and keep going. Most the time I just try to keep going no matter what and sooner or later I get through it all and I am much stronger for it.

>> Define achiever....
I hope I'm not coming across as an inflated ego by answering this, oh well, here goes :
To want to win & be good at it : These are things I find help in this respect.
>> Have a passion for what you intend spending time/effort on. Sounds as if you've got that down pat already. That's great!
>> Research project thoroughly (as much knowledge on chosen subject is bound to put you ahead)
Determination, Self-confidence (the self defeating voice - get rid of it - force yourself to think positively if necessary - when you notice the self-defeating voice creeping in... If you've researched project THOROUGHLY, & understand it, this self defeating voice shouldn't have a place in your head at all.)
Blood/Sweat/Tears (work, in other words)
Adversity, failure & obstacles ~ view them not as bad things, but as challenges ~ makes you more determined to succeed.
Negative criticisms? If they are NOT constructive, blow them out of the water. Don't listen to them or take them to heart.
If they are constructive criticisms ~ heed them & learn from them.
>> Never look a gift horse in the mouth ~ if someone knowledgable about your subject genuinely offers to help ~ accept it. Two heads are better than one.
>> Knowing if you will succeed? No, you don't know that 100% ~ If you don't, you've still gained heaps of knowledge ~ it will open other doors for you, or you can always try again ~ you may be able to pinpoint where you went wrong the first time & improve the next time.
Good Luck!
Hope this helps. Ciao!

When you say achiever, what do you mean? We all at some point in our lives achieve things. Or we could be successful at something and not have a passion for it.
When you ask what that person thinks about in order for them to get something they want, they are probably thinking about that one thing. And dont stop thinking about it untill they get it. Or they think about a certain motivation or something sentimental about why they are passionate about what they are doing to keep them going.
They handle adversity and obsticles as challanges to make them better, they handle failure as learning experiances, and negative criticism as others help to be better at what they are doing.
You never know for sure if you will succeed in something, You can only give it all you got and hope for the best.

I also have a self-defeating voice and I am trying to fight that too.
In my school the highest possible grade is 1 and the lowest is 5. In my course we're required to at least get a general weighted average of 2.25. During the first semester I always thought that I was going to fail and that pushed me to study well. I am now waiting for one last grade for a subject but for the rest they are in the line of 1.
The result is not the only thing that matters. The procedure and the attitude towards it also matters. Wouldn't it be nice to do something whilst having a positive attitude? I do believe that it is tiring to fight for something while deep inside you already feel you are destined to fail. This self-defeating voice must be conquered.
Much is in store for all of us if we exert great effort to achieve. The task is hard enough so we shouldn't burden ourselves more by telling ourselves that we can't make it. (Just a little thought, success and wealth doesn't always mean fulfillment. Go for fulfillment!)
I hope I got it right! God bless you!

I believe that if there's going to be a winner. It's going to be me. ....I also minimize adversity by staying focused on the mission and not distractions. I overcome failure, obstacles, and negative criticism by learning from them, and then looking beyond them....hope this helps. Good Luck

I used to have that self-defeating voice and I didn't get rid of it until I started achieving things for others. Sometimes, we just can't do things to make ourselves happy. We try, but that's not a strong enough motivator. Let's face it--we talk ourselves out of things, doubt ourselves, etc. So, because I have a heart for others, I noticed that I started achieving more when I did it for others. After my grandmother died, I wanted to make my mother happy, so I raised my grades for her. I'd been a 2.5 student for years and decided to start pulling in 3.5s, if not for me, then for her. I even made it to 4.0 at one point. When I saw what I could do, the joy for myself came naturally. Now, I am a classic overachiever, but I do it for me. It wasn't enough just to say, "I'll be happy if I do this." Sometimes, you have to say, "Let me do this and then I'll be happy." Just go for it!
