solar panels are currently used to run small fans to keep interiors cool on hot days.They are also used for experimental cars.But current solar panels cannot actually power a real everyday car

Yes! There is a huge race in Australia every year and all the cars are powered by solar panels (try looking up Sunracers on the net). Still a long way from the market but they are very interesting.
