I hate saying fetus I say baby, but a lot of people try to correct me. Is there a point where the fetus becomes a baby?

"A fetus becomes a baby when it is born and takes it's first breath" - this causes a lot of changes in the baby. BUT I think it depends on the context though on what makes the word "fetus" acceptable. We use the word "fetus" and "fetal" all the time (I'm a labor and delivery nurse) but I don't walk up to pregnant women and ask how their "fetus" is doing...I ask how their baby is. It's just a word that has been beaten on by people everywhere regaurding on if it's okay to abort it. Fetus is the MEDICAL term describing an infant who is in the mothers womb that is on Fetal circulation and does not use lungs to breath - period end of discussion. Have a nice day! :)

Personally the term fetus is used for people that like to be technical or those that are for abortion. I have never called my children a fetus just because I was earlier in the pregnancy.

When you are pregnant for something, I assume that you are going to give birth to what you are pregnant for (common sense). So if you are pregnant for a fetus, you would give birth to a fetus. Do you want to introduce your unborn child as a fetus? That's about as normal as calling everyone homo sapien. It's proper, but it's not natural. I call it a baby because I am going to give birth to a baby, not a fetus.

I think the "official" time is at around 14-16 weeks.

I say fetus sometimes, and sometimes say baby when I should say fetus. If you are pregnant...what the heck...it's a baby...why do they bother to correct you.....

that's an embryo first till 8 weeks gestation, (not 12) and then a fetus till the physique is completely emerged from the womb. it quite is extremely like an infant, infant, teen, and grownup. An 80 twelve months previous can't be categorised as an infant.

It's a fetus until you give birth to it. But I call mine baby any way.

man, that just sounds dumb. which sounds better...I'm pregnant with a little baby girl! or...I'm pregnant with a little girl fetus! I don't see the point in correction when it comes to everyday talk...maybe technical talk or something but...even my doctor calls my "fetus" baby

fetus is just the technical term but if you think about it from conception its a baby/human being because really what else can it be or become?
