I would be hard pressed to decide between Anne of Green Gables (because she got her first book published at 18) and Arwen from LOTR because she's the best developed (literarily speaking) female in the series.

To knight1192a -- it was late, I was tired -- Eowyn was in my head, Arwen was hotter (lol), my apologies.

Prior to the 7th Harry Potter book, I wanted to be one of the Weasley twins because they have found a vocation that's fun and satisfying. Basically, they got to play even while they were working while they ran Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes. Even better, they are underappreciated geniuses. I think it took a lot of creativity to develop the sickness-inducing candies and their antidotes in the skiving snackboxes that students would buy in order to skip class. Some of the twins' wares are even used by aurors who need protection from Death Eaters and dark wizards.

*spoilers ahead*

Perhaps the best part of all is that, until the last book, they were together all the time. In each other, they had a partner in crime and a best friend. The twins do have other friends, but all they really seem to need is each other. I think it'd be wonderful to have a constant companion whom you knew wouldn't desert you. They finish each other's sentences and they never fight. I always wanted a friend like that. It wouldn't hurt to have their popularity and great sense of humor, either.

Louise in Jeanette Wintersons "Written on the Body", I'm something of a cop out here because it is a lesbian novel, yet to me one of the most touching and enlightened pieces of writing I have come across.

Here is an excerpt, review link in sources

"Written on the body is a secret code only visible in certain lights: the accumulations of a lifetime gather there. In places the palimpsest is so heavily worked that the letters feel like Braille. I like to keep my body rolled up away from prying eyes, never unfold too much, or tell the whole story. I didn't know that Louise would have reading hands. She has translated me into her own book."

Um, as I recall Arwen didn't play much of a role in the book. Though they did give her a far larger role in the movies. Eowyn and Galadriel both played bigger roles in the book. And both were better developed.

I wanted to be the main character, Nick Andros, or another, Stu Redmond, OR Larry Underwood in The Stand, by Stephen King. Or Jack Sawyer in The Talisman, by King and Peter Straub.

I'd be Dumbledore, too, gay or not!

I would be William Wallace, the book I read was, "The Scottish Chiefs" but I wouldn't want to die the way he did. He was quite the hero and said to be goodlooking which is always helpful. He was a loved leader and was portrayed by Mel Gibson in "Braveheart."

I would like to be Professor Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series because he is the master of all things snarky, intelligent, callous, and brave. And oh so gloriously pale.

I always wanted to be Scout, in To Kill a Mockingbird, but since you said opposite gender....I'd have to say Hagbard, from The Illuminatus! trilogy. Since he's the only one who knows what's going on, and is in charge of everything.

Francis Abernathy, from The Secret History. Suicidal, overly paranoid murderer he may be, but I love him.
