The same reason American whites and Asian Americans and Latin Americans. they're American. some for college some for love of country some cause they feel they have no other choice

Alot of blacks come from low-income families and cannot afford an education so they take the opportunity to advance themselves through the US Military. Good for them! This is also very true with poor southern whites. As far as I'm concerned it is alot better than ending up in a life of poverty or crime.

Some do it because its one of the easier options after high school, others because it helps pay for college, others to "see the world" or so they think, and still others use it as a way to propel themselves ahead in life (aka get out of the ghetto/bad neighborhood, etc.). And then there's still others who are really patriotic, and believe in serving there country. Most of the black guys I know who joined the military joined because they thought this would be a good way to "see the world" or that it would help them move ahead in their lives.

Some people don't have many options to advance in life. Military may seem like a path to something better.

When we had the draft and they became of age they didn't have a choice, and now like the first answerer said to try to advance in life, plus a love for the country and wanting to keep it safe, like anyone else.
