ok here's the question: "What does Ralph and Piggy spot in the sand, and how do they react?"

They spotted a shell and were curious about it. Piggy commented that if you blow on the shell, it could be used as a conch, like a horn. This shell would become symbolic, being used by Ralph (who is later elected chief) whenever he wanted to assemble the other boys to a meeting, using it to call order.

Um, if you're in one of the first chapters (probably one or two), then it's probably the conch shell, which they later use to call all of the kids to the platform and they use it in meetings so that the person holding it won't be interrupted.
