Recently a friend of mine suggested cloves - yes, clove sticks!

Since I had nothing to lose - and there were ants all over the place in my kitchen - I decided to give it a try.

It worked! My kitchen is now 100% ant-free, and all I did was place a few clove sticks in the corner of the kitchen balcony.

You can place them wherever you want - just make sure you change them every week so they're always fresh. You can also use clove oil, but it sounds messier.

There's another advantage to clove: your kitchen will always smell really nice!!! :-)

Good luck!

I live where it doesn't get very cold and ants are a constant bother. I just heard a new one and don't know if it works or not but it was a reliable source. They said to leave a few piles of cornmeal around and the ants will take it back, eat it, and then die because they can't digest it. I also know that they will not cross cinamon. But they will sacrifice themselves so that other ants can crawl over them. I have had no luck with ant traps but perhaps there are sooo many here. What works for me is to track where they are coming from and spray my way from the inside to where they are coming in. Then I spray around the base of my house and around the doors and windows with something that lasts a few weeks or so. I just do this on a fairly regular basis or whenever I see them on the outside of my house. They finally move to a place of less resistance. I did mix a large bag of cinnamon around a red ant hill (the large ones that attack and have many hills and underground tunnels that go for miles) and they dug up in an entirely different area-altho it was still my yard. The only way to get rid of them or discourage them in your area is to pour gasoline down the hole and then carefully light it. They will not dig up a burnt area. I think all this may be a bit more info than you need for your area.

Ants are very interesting creatures. When they are in their marching lines, they are either looking for food or water or are moving their colony. I would follow their little trail and find out where they are entering you house. Find the source and end the problem.

I highly recommend Diatomaceous Earth! Yeah - its a big word for very simple stuff. Its similar to sand but is really ground up little critters called Diatoms. When they are a live they have a hard outer surface - so when ground up its like tiny ground up sea shells. It feels like a powder to us but to bugs its actually really sharp. Its completely safe and natural! (No Chemicals!! particularly if you have kids/pets). The fine powder absorbs lipids from the cuticle, the waxy outer layer of insects' exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate (Wikipedia). Its greats stuff and comes in a food grade version.

Just sprinkle around the outside of your house and anywhere in your house (carpet, etc!). You can vacuum it up anytime.

My grandma didn't live to hear this trick, and she had ants EVERYWHERE, and like you, a clean house.

Sprinkle cornmeal where the ants are. It's sweet and they like it, and eat it, but they can't digest it and it kills them.

If you can find the mound, all the better, sprinkle it on the mound, too.
