when he wakes and he sometimes goes right back to sleep, but if not he has to get in bed with us in order to fall back asleep. Could we be spoiling him? Something else in his crib bothering him? He slept through the night until recently and now he just fights sleep like crazy. I don't know what to do.

It could be teething, however it could also be that he is going through a major growth spurt. I know my daughter hit one at 6 months and she went from sleeping 7-8 hours per night to waking up every 2-3 hours again to nurse! We thought we were going to go crazy with fatigue when all of the sudden we noticed that her clothes were all suddenly too short and then she started sleeping again. When they hit growth spurts they need more calories to fuel the development :) Growing can also make them feel aches in their bones and muscles--which causes fussiness too.

Don't worry, it will pass soon. If it's teeth, they'll break through soon and he'll feel much better; if it's growing, get ready to move up a size in clothes :)

Sometimes they go through these fazes - maybe you need to give him solids?
But I would ignore him - at 5 months - i wouldn't bring him in to my bed - i wouldn't give him a bottle - nothing. They go through phases of wanting to reduce sleep -- but if you ignore it, they soon go back to good sleep patterns - they often do it just as they learn a new skill - for instance - standing up!

i wouldn't get him use to sleeping in the bed with you. i agree that it is probably teething. my son didn't like the baby orajel, he would scream everytime i put it on him. i just had to live through it. it might also be gas, if you just started him on cereal or something like that. try gas drops. good luck.

Have you checked his mouth to see if he is teething? This is about the right age for it to start.
