what is the best way to store pens/pencils in purse vertically?

my purse only has room vertically..Hard to be a woman...LOL

Since I collect ink pens, I should have no problem answering this question. But right now I'm just drawing blanks.

Why do they need to be vertical?

Best way to PROTECT color pencils from breaking inside the wooden sheath is to sandwich them between foam sheets in a flat pencil box.
