please ignore the point that we have bombs and some people don't

I believe that the Roman Leigons were the best army!! Because of them the Roman Empire conquered most of the middle east. They were disciplined, well trained and their tactics and way of fighting was un rivaled!

Specifically Caesar's 10th Legion, then there's Ghengis Khan's unholy mongollian horde, the classic divisions of the Waffen SS, Alexander's Macedonian hoplites, Zhukov's unstoppable Red Army in 1945, the shock and awe force of Schwatzkof, and Lee's Army of Northern Virginia (if only they had more resources to back them up).

In terms of over all dominance and effectiveness in it's own time, I'd have to go with Rome. The Roman legion was a mighty force to be reckoned with. It was completely unparalleled anywhere in the world at the time.

Nobody else has had such a clear cut superiority in tactics, leadership, training and equipment all at the same time.

The US has had an impressive war record in some ways. But they've never had that kind of clear superiority. In WW2, they just didn't have the equipment or training to be the best. The Modern Army is lacking in leadership and training compared to some nations. And don't forget that many of those victories on the tally sheet are either coalition efforts, or against very weak opponents.

The Greeks just didn't have the manpower to be a contender. And because they were a collection of independent city states, there was no unified leadership. They really had no technological edge. But they did have excellent tactics and training.

The Carthaginian Army under Hannibal 247-182 B.C.

He defeated the Romans in battles of trasimene, trebia and cannae. During his invasion of Italy, most Roman allies joined his army for protection.

Hannibal's Army controlled an area far away from homeland for more than a decade without a single loss from a major engagement.

Because of their brilliancy in warfare, Rome adopted their military tactics and strategies.

I agree with you completely about the Roman Legions. but you also have to consider the armys led by alexander the great, adolf hitler, and even the barbarian tribes such as the Mongols. Ghangus Khan...conquered and created the second largest empire in history.

Great examples already stated. Then you could possibly add Nazi Germany of WW2 to that list. They might not have been the biggest, but they conquered most of Europe and Russia. And this after going bankrupt and everything after losing WW1. Of course they did terrible things, but they were 'great' in the military sense.

Well it is hard to go back and view the armies of the past, and they were pretty frickin awesome (ie: Romans). But our (the US) war record speaks for itself. Records show we officially only lost 1 war in our lifetime (to beat the british?).

An army is only as good as it's commanders. That is true for any period in history.
