You are comparing flooding, in a place that's below sea level to fires in hills way above sea level. The red cross is available with shelters here for those who need them. With Katrina, there would have been no place to set up shelters! Also, there are huge economic differences. The people in Louisiana were told to evacuate, but so many of them did not have the means to leave. No car, no money, etc. That is not the situation here. Many people here went to hotels and not the shelters. In Louisiana, many of the residents did not insurance, along with their other economic problems, so they cannot rebuild. Having lived in So Cal my entire life & having been to the areas devastated by Katrina, I can compare. I saw poverty there, that I did not know even existed in this country. I could go on, but I think you get the picture.

Excellent question. Our Federal Government picks and chooses were they want the money spent.
New Orleans should be a finished city. There are still truck loads of garbage on the side of the streets.
There may be a second reason, if the people from the ninth ward, where the majority of the water were after the levee broke, if there are no repairs then the city can buy them out and pay what they want for this property.
I believe there are other plans not to rebuild the low-income apts, and build the ground up and build something the entire city and tourist will enjoy and bring revenue into the city.
All the while some of the former people of New Orleans are living in Formaldehyde trailers the people do not need to be in. Creating serious health issues. These trailers were made in another country where formaldehyde is not out-lawed.
But after two years the people should have jobs and affording their own place to live and the government should not paying for motel and apts for some of these people.

Aside from the usual "Bush hates black people" responses, the correct answer is that FEMA has learned from its mistakes that were made in past disasters like Katrina. Also, the money is there for LA to be rebuilt, but for some reason the democrats running the city and state can't get the ball rolling. The federal gov. has done all it can do. It is now up to the local and state officials to rebuild.

If you're expecting me to just throw up my hands and admit that Bush likes rich white Californians better than he likes poor Louisiana blacks, well, sorry to disappoint you, but I'm not going to do it.
What I will tell you is that California is a Bush-bashing state, and a good lot of Californians who are being aided by the Bush administration hate Bush just as bad as you do. What I'll also tell you is that not everyone being affected by these fires is some rich, old, white Republican.
What I'll tell you as well is that the California state government is not as clueless as the Louisiana state government and the New Orleans municipal government were as to what the proper channels are to solicit help from the federal government and from neighboring state governments.
I tried to type this slowly, because I know you probably don't read very fast, if you're ignorant enough to genuinely believe your own B.S.

1. If we got relief in "like 5 min." then why have over a 350,000 people been evacuated and a still undetermined number of homes and structures been lost. We were without a lot of resources for 3 whole days also. There are tons of homes that were left to burn simply because the resources were not there to fight the fires.
2. The people in CA evacuated when they were told to evacuate, making it much easier for emergency responders to respond and report on damages and what other services were needed. Instead of waiting until the last second and jamming up roadways preventing emergency crews from being able to respond - they got out and let the crews do their best.
3. The Government in LA is corrupt! Money meant to help people has been misappropriated by the people that are supposed to help them.
4. People in CA don't expect the government to bail them out of their circumstances - they took the initiative to take care of themselves. They are also not stupid enough to blame a natural disaster on the government.
5. It is a lot harder to get help and supplies to an area that is underwater than it is to an area that is on fire .
In addition to all of this - the reason CA is not another Katrina is because we have pride in ourselves and we are used to caring for ourselves and not living off of the government dollar. If you notice - Qualcomm stadium has thousands of people residing there and they are not pissing and shi**ing in the bleachers, looting, and raping each other. This is not a race issue - just because a lot of the people affected in CA are white and Katrina was black has nothing to do with it. Disasters are not discriminating! The people in LA were just as capable of getting off of their asses and making sure that the evacuation centers weren't a cesspool - but they did not - they just sat there in their own filth and stupidity waiting to be rescued.
Get a life and stop trying to make a race issue where there is none.

1. Because the Governor of California asked for that assistance as soon as he realized that he had a disaster on his hands. Bingo! Ten thousand cots came in from the Department of Defense. Governor Blanco of Louisiana didn't submit the certification required under Federal law until four days after Katrina struck. A Naval task force had to sit in the Gulf and await the lady's requesting that aid from the Feds.
2. The mayor of San Diego and his North County counterparts used their transit assets to move people who had no cars to shelters from areas being evacuated. Mayor Nagin only used about three of the over 400 NORTA busses for evacuation. And those were the families of local government and police officials.
3. The Mayor of San Diego had them open up Qualcomm Stadium as a shelter/. He also got food, water and essential supplies delivered to that site. Mayor Nagin left America with the horrendous images of a locked Superdome with no supplies.
4. The Mayors of San Diego, Los Angeles and Malibu Colony stayed in their towns and have done so throughout this ordeal. Ray Nagin went to San Antonio.
That's the answer. Competent, local and and state officials who got on the job and gave a damn. In about four years or less all of those homes will be rebuilt and Katrina victims will still be in those FEMA trailers waiting for Nagin and Company to clean up the lower Ninth Ward. However, they will be able to draw some comfort from the fact that the huge hole in the ground at Church and Vesey Streets in lower Manhattan will still be there, years after the attack on America.
It's called simple competence on the part of local and state officials. Not shucking and jiving.

Relief in 5 minutes?
San Diego County went through this in 2003, and learned from the mistakes there. We were better prepared and willing to evacuate. What you saw was a local- city, county, state AND volunteer- response, not Federal!
What immediate Federal aid did YOU see?

You natural disaster haters are unreal, the only thing you find wrong with this picture is that in LA, most of those who still reside in FEMA RV's are um, how do you say, um....

What's wrong with the picture is the people of LA. They are expecting to still be coddled and have everything done for them & paid for without them having to fill out paperwork or do anything. It's that whole entitlement existence that the liberal create. The other thing that's wrong with the picture is to even consider rebuilding some of those areas. The areas that are so far below sea-level need to be returned to what they used to be - natural wetlands.
Calif rebuilding quickly simply shows the difference between the 'gimmes' and those with backbone who go out & look for help or just do it themselves instead of whining.

New Orleans has always been a welfare city. The people wait around for government to take care of them long time before Katrina. Don't kid yourself New Orleans is and was a corrupt third world city. That is the problem.
