A survey of 395 children given at a local elementary school showed that 125 like chocolate ice cream 175 like pistachio ice cream, and 145 do not like chocolate or pistachio ice cream. How many children like at least one kind of ice cream mentioned in the survey?

Assuming chocolate and pistachio are the only choices, then you have 145 who don't like either. All of the rest must like at least one.

in the first part--300 like SOME kind of ice cream--and 50 responses are missing out of 395 because 125 and 175 and 145 equal 445--you said this was out of 395--the numbers do not add up.

In the second part--IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL how many like BOTH, because the kids were never asked that.

in the second part 75 like both, 172 don't like either which means 225 do like ice cream, 175 like one 125 like the other which is 300, the 225 who like ice cream , 75 of whom voted once for each kind. (??)

in the first part 250 like at least one kind of ice cream, because 145 don't like either, the numbers not matching is because some kids like both. (??)
