If your honest and open about your body and you explain things to him when he has a question. Then talk to him about it, if he's like me. It should either come from a guy (I did it at 8 years old too), or a book. You dont want him growing up thinking its not normal, and if he doing the deed give him time to do it.
You sound like a good mother, talk to him about the facts of life. Read up on it on the Internet and then talk to him.
Most of all let him know its normal and all guys do it.
Wish you luck

I had the talk with my oldest son when he was really only about 7 or 8. You simply keep it at a level he can understand, guage his reactions and figure out as you go along how much he is able to digest. If they are old enough to ask questions, they desrve proper answers tailored to their level of maturity. See if you can find an age appropriate book at the library...that always helps. Goodness, I ended up drawing pictures to help him understand. He's 14 1/2 now and when we are alone we still have very open and frank discussions about sex and sexuality. Just whatever you do, don't make him embarassed and don't show your own discomfort.
I just had to have a brief discussion with my 7 year old daughter yesterday evening about the fact that touching herself in certain ways feels good but it's something people do in the privacy of their own bedroom. I was calm and acknowledged her comments as correct and expanded on her observations as I deemed appropriate.
Hope that helps

he sounds like he only try to find out what he has ?
i would doubt at 8 he masturbating ....
maybe at 10 even 11, but your never know
sit him down , ask him , if he likes girls yet.
has he kissed one yet ? has he even got a girl friend yet
most of the time , you will find ,he will say NO i hate girls, no i dont kiss them that's dirty etc etc
but because he hasn't got a dad, he has to grow up very fast, and feel the need to protect you , he acting all big and tall perhaps ?
this is normal, and if he doing just that, good for him
one more thing , it better that he feel embarrassed rather than , not knowing anything ...... agree?,
this take time, so take yours, one day at a time
just ask simple questions, he will follow thru

I wouldn't say anything yet. If he is only 8, he may have just been "exploring" and seeing what things would happen if he touched it, etc. If he starts to do it more frequently, I might talk to him. You certainly do not want him to think it is dirty or not normal.

I would remain silent as you could scar him emotionally against sex for the rest of his life and cause pshcological damage,. It is normal for you men to explore their bodies being inquisative, just let him be and do not worry about what comes natural in nature. give him the privacy

he obviously figured out how to "do the deed" to himself without you saying anything to him.. so just let him be. im sure he's talked about it with his friends.
