She hinted on tv today that he had an infatuation with a boy at Hogwarts - but if memory serves all the main characters were 17 and younger-so basically Dumbledore was a Pedophile? And she chose to reveal this AFTER we all bought all the books and movies lol??
(Personally I think it's a bunch of crock-she just thought up the idea after writing the final book lmao)

To Weaslett... -lmao-you truly crack me up-an ignoramus who cannot even spell a simple word such as 'sentence' getting your knickers in a bunch over my 'fun' thought provoking question. I doubt you're intelligent enough to understand the gist even if I break it down for you. However I am confident my seven years in University makes me definately more Educated than you. Dumbledore the homosexual was interested in Harry as J.K. herself suggested on Global News and City TV LIVE in Toronto on Tuesday. I'm sorry your life is so pathetic you feel so angry about a bloody book ha ha that you have to be here lashing out like a nutcase. Personally I would have liked to have known I was supporting a series that was AGAINST my RELIGIOUS beliefs after buying all the books and movies for my CHILDREN and taking them to the theaters to boot. I don't like being tricked. THAT is MY point.

Another thing 'Ms Know-it-all' ...J.K. Rowling is not the Worlds Richest Self-Made Woman-but the third. http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/10/worlds_richest.php (NOW who is spewing misinformation as facts-LOL) I know you're really proud of your former Welfare Mom turned writer but, as others have said-soon no-one will even remember who she is. That's the way fame goes-out of sight ,,,,out of mind and so what really?

I think she means the infatuation was when Dumpledore was a student.

I'm not sure why she chose to announce it now. It kinda puts a different light on all those 'private lessons' with Harry, don't you think?

Actually I think she has lost the plot. HP is finished, so nobody cares what she thinks or does. Must be hard, like losing the presidency or something.

1. Whether she is the wealthiest self made woman or the third wealthiest self made woman makes little difference. In either case, she could never make another dime, and still have more money than she could spend in two lifetimes.

2. Are your religious beliefs really offended? Going by what is written in the books, and what Rowling said, there is no evidence what so ever that he actually acted on his preference. Is being a celibate homosexual an unforgivable sin, or a good, Christian way of trying to repent the sin we are all born with? One can argue that he actually provides a good example for people to follow (just throwing that out there, flame away...). Not to mention that if you are really throwing the religion flag on HP, there are much bigger infractions here than homosexuality.

3. Whether she answered the question or not, she is going to be firmly in the public eye at least until the last movie is out. If this was happening then, maybe the attention argument would hold water. Now, it simply makes no sense.

As others have said, the reason she said it now is very clear. The director of the 6th film was about to misrepresent the character she created. The truth of the matter is that this is her story. If she says he was always gay, then he was always gay. Period, end of sentence. Why was there no evidence of it in the books, because the story wasn't about him. If it were "Dumbledore and the Sorcerer's Stone," I suspect that it would be a different matter.

Honestly....WHO CARES?

So what, the man is [supposedly] homosexual.
Does that matter? She could have, and probably
made it up, but should people change their opinion
of him? I would hope not; Dumbledore's character
was still one of the best created in the book series
and if this was an original fact of JK's...she probably
left it out due to the discrimination that this character
would receive based on people's beliefs.

Just imagine how many more fans of the book there
would have been if this weren't seen as an "evil" book
to some book-burning religious freaks. If she had told
all her fans that Harry and Ron were at the top of the
Ministry of Magic and that Hermione was in Magical Law,
would we think she's just making it up now?

It's all a matter of what people choose to believe.
Dumbledore wasn't a pedophile. You misunderstood
what she was saying: when he was actually attending
Hogwarts, he had an infatuation with a boy. It was most
likely Grendalwald, which would explain their close friendship.

If people are no longer going to favor Dumbledore and
see him as something disgusting or perverted, that's
really sad. The book tries to show that discrimination and
domination aren't the best answers to the world's problems
(muggle-borns/"mudbloods" and werewolves, for example).

The book was awesome, brilliant, and great.
End of story.

Long Live DUMBLEDORE!

First of all, any idea she thinks of is considered CANON because she created this entire SERIES from her own IMAGINATION. She has the right to do anything with her art!

If you would perhaps read her transcribed interview on the matter from Carnegie Hall, you would know that she has always viewed him as a homosexual. His sexuality makes NO difference whatsoever in ANY part of ANY plot element EXCEPT for his relationship with Grindelwald.

Now, if you had read the series thoroughly, I would take this as an educated comment. However, not only did you rely on a press source for "factual" information, but you took whatever the television program said at face value with no other questions, as most ignorant people do. Some of the important messages from Rowling's series include knowing how to question authority and seek your own knowledge, never to rely on something as flighty as popular press to relay the whole truth without a spin or personal agenda, and to be TOLERANT.

Let me set you straight on something. Dumbledore loved Gellert Grindelwald, a boy HIS OWN AGE at the time who was from Durmstrang, another magical school in a different country, whom he met as a young boy in his hometown of Godric's Hollow. Both shared an obsession with the Deathly Hallows, which you would also know had you paid attention in your supposed reading of the novel. Grindelwald grew to be a very dark wizard, brought on the death of Dumbledore's sister, Ariana, and basically ended up screwing Dumbledore over in the end. Dumbledore was blinded by his affection for Grindelwald and the companionship of someone as brilliant as he was. To suggest that Dumbledore was a pedophile who took advantage of a child is preposterous.

And do you really think J.K. Rowling needs anymore press? She is the richest self-made woman in the world, and the Harry Potter film series has accumulated even more gross profits than the Star Wars movies and all James Bond films. She still has two more films to put out.

So, NO. Rowling is surely not seeking attention, she has been getting attention over this book for nearly two decades and I doubt that the said attention will stop any time soon.

Also, NO. Dumbledore did not have an infatuation with a student whilst Headmaster of Hogwarts. Try reading the books again.

Finally, PLEASE keep your ignorant opinions (which should have had further research applied to them to begin with) to yourself. Spreading heresy is a ridiculous habit and you should seek to break it immediately.

No, I think she has had this as part of the series's backstory for a long time. Also, I don't think that JKR has an agenda, or is seeking more publicity.

According to the story I read, she had told the writer of the screenplay for HBP that Dumbledore was gay because there was mention of a female love interest in the screenplay and she had to set them right. Having done that, she might as well have made it public, since it would have eventually come out anyway--she could control when and how it was done. and in any case, this story came out because she was directly asked if Dumbledore loved anyone.

Throughout the series, we know Dumbledore as a tireless and seemingly single-minded fighter against Dark Wizards (at least from Harry's perspective; we do have to remember that Albus is also a great teacher, an alchemist, and important theoretical Wizard--remember the tools and instruments he made himself). But how did Albus become that way?

We learn much about this in DH, with Arianna's story, Aberforth's story and the story of the friendship between Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald. In reading DH, it was clear that Grindelwald seduced Dumbledore on a number of levels; intellectually, ideologically, and, by JKR's new revelation, emotionally. We don't know if that seduction was sexual as well, and I'm not sure it is important for us to know.

The revelation completes the picture for us of a man who felt betrayed, injured by one he loved, ashamed at how far he went from rational thought and behavior, how far he really was from what he thought he was.

The up shot is that we now know more completely Dumbledore's motivations for fighting Dark Wizards--his shame at his own tangential contribution to Grindelwald's career, his reluctance to fight him, and, when Voldemort rose, his determination to not to repeat his prior mistake of inaction and to fight Voldemort from the start.

So in summery, It was part of the way JKR viewed Dumbledore and understood him. I don't think it was something that would have come out voluntarily--more likely something that would have made a scholarly article 50 or 60 years from now after she was gone and literary scholars had access to her full notes (assuming she left them to be investigated).

BTW, there is some inkling of this in DH, where Rita Skeeter talks about devoting a chapter in her book about Dumbledore to the Dumbledore/Harry relationship. This is not to say that there was anything improper--but that JKR did put out a hint.

I kind of agree with hangfire. It's gotta be tough, ending a series that was this big pop culture phenomenon, or whatever.

Although, I guess it really doesn't matter if she 'made it up' since none of it's real, anyway. It all came from her head, so she can say whatever she wants. I'll just try not to think about it too much if I decide to re-read the books.

I love dumbeldore's character.. but now because of what J.K. Rowling said it changes my whole perspective on him. I still like him though, I just don't have the same respect for him as I did before. I don't think she just made it up. I think she thought it all along, she just didn't know it would be such a big deal to everyone.

No, this was not a "made it up on the spot" thing. She was waiting until after the last book to reveal it. It got such a positive response from the mature folk gathered at Carnegie that she said "If I'd known this would make you so happy, I would have announced it sooner."

The 7th book makes a lot more sense if he's gay. His relationships with Grendalwald ?

She's had to tell the movie producers not to include mentions of him and possible romantic relationships. I'd say she always knew.
