Snowboarding can be hard to learn at first. It depends a lot on your age (the younger you are the faster you will pick it up), and your previous sports experience. Since you already skateboard and surf it will help you. You have the balance part down, which for me, was the hardest part. The thing that is different about snowboarding compared to surfing is that the edge on a snowboard is very unforgiving. If you turn too soon with too much edge you are going be hurled to the ground. It is very sudden and violent at times. But once you get the hang of it you will get better very quickly.

My advice, take a couple of lessons to get the basics down. Then just go as often as possible to practise. I highly recommend that you wear knee pads under your pants, wrist guards and a helmet. Most common snowboard injuries are a broken wrist and head injuries.

And if I learned how, you can to. I started @ 38 years old with no previous sports that required balance and coordination. And I am so glad I stuck it out, I am completely obsessed with snowboarding. I am dying right now waiting for enough snow for the resort to open. I go snowboarding 3-4 days/nights a week, while working 50-60 hours a week.

So go for it and never look back, you're going to love it... once you get past the falling down part.

The skiers are just jealous because that can't do it like us. Stupid two-plankers. You be hatin' on us, we be hatin' on you.

Would you rather have fun riding straight down, which is fairly simple (I've done it my first and only time skiing), or would you rather challenge yourself and try to get the hang of riding sideways?

From personal experience, of the three main boardsports, snowboarding has the hardest learning curve. Progression is easier than in skateboarding, but it's the initial part that usually turns most people away. Take a lesson, wear the right clothes, and wear a helmet. And stay on the bunny hill at first so you don't kill yourself on the mountain.

Surfing is most like snowboarding. You start out turning about the same. On a skateboard, it's more like carving on a snowboard, except you'll be going a lot faster on a snowboard.

Just about everybody I've asked likes snowboarding more than skiing. Funny thing, we had to share something about us in one of my classes, and when I said snowboarding, somebody went, "YOU CAN DO THAT?!?!" People think it's really hard, but if you stick through with it, it's a blast.

Can't wait for this season!

If you can skateboard and snowboard, you'll be good to go. Snowboarding, is more like surfing than skateboarding though. Just get yourself a decent deck, and some good bindings, bindings are important, don't skimp out on them, you don't want to be flying down a hill and have your straps come loose. Keep in mind though, turning on a snowboard is a lot different then a skateboard unless your talking about leaning. Any sharp turns will be done by leaning hard forwards or back, depending on which way you ride (unless you can ride switch foot) and which way your wanting to turn. Start on a bunny hill, if you do fine just get on a lift, go up and ride. The hardest thing you'll need to lean first is stopping, my advice, learn to lean back or forwards to stop while your moving relatively slow, then just keep practicing gathering more speed each time.
Pray for lots of snow, man I can't wait, peace!

It is easier to learn than skiing but harder to master - so you will spend years getting really good which is the real beauty of snowboarding. And skiers very often injure their knees which is a rare injury with snowboarders - just protect your wrists and learn how to fall correctly.

Several of my best students were skateboarders before they tried snowboarding and I think it did help them. There is one other reason - skateboarders are usually flexible and have good balance - all of which help to learn snowboading.

The biggest advantage that helps in learning to snowboard is balance and leaning to stay over the board - true of surfing and skateboarding.

Good Luck

my kids snowboard...if you can surf....you should have no problems....it's just like anything else they have done...practice makes perfect...I will tell you they snowboarded pretty easily on the first try. they are 12 and 16.They started at 8 and 12...good luck...OH... and try a cheap one that your feet slides into rather than "locks" into at first...if you can't find one...just remember to lean back and fall on your butt if you get in trouble! Good luck, we love it!

Just book an introductory lesson with a guide, that will teach you the basics - most of which you will already know.

Do that on your first morning and you'll be whizzing down the mountain by the afternoon.

Book it in advance, or with your rep if you're going with a holiday company like SkiWorld.

Snowboarding may seem "cool" but it's just a pain in the a$$. Skiing is much easier since you have ski poles and two feet separate rather than being strapped to a board (imagine ball and chain) But I guess that you can try first on a small slope or a bunny hill.

Snow boarding is very easy once you get the hang of it. Start out on small slopes and work youre way up. Skate boarding and surfing will help you tons. People who dont have that experience have to start from scratch(like me). GOOD LUCK!!
