Hi, I have a question for you all. do you expect presents for your birthday?? the reason I ask is that in my family we buy our mother a present and take her to dinner. when I was born my mother was in labor for 21 hours and I did nothing, why is she supposed to buy me presents every year? I know people who don't even thank their mothers on their birthdays. let me know your thoughts. thanks!

What a WONDERFUL Way to CELEBRATE the Woman that brought you into this world and nurtured you all these many years!

I, for one, do NOT expect any presents on my Birthday .. and haven't for years. I can also only WISH my Mother were around to celebrate that day with me .. for my mother DIED over a quarter century ago. It is tinged with sadness that my MOTHER never saw me become the Empty-Nesting (Female) Retiree (and Military Retiree too!) that I am today, and did not get to see me earn all my Degrees (UGrad and Grad), did not get to see the way I OVERCAME the obstacles in my path (including that short disaster of a marriage to an abusive, violent sociopath), AND .. most importantly, I used the STRENGTH of my Mother to BECOME the Long Term Single Parent that I was (by myself ... I HAD to earn the income to support them .. because the Ex never complied with the court orders .. and he also was convicted of abusing them as well).

I don't expect anything on my birthday but I usually get gifts anyway. I love your family tradition. I don't think I really appreciated my mom as much before I started having kids of my own. Not only is labor intense but caring for a child is tough work.
I guess thats why mothers day was inventend but still kids should recognise the woman that gave them life on the day they were born.

Your birthday is a celebration of your life. You have been part of the family for another year and they celebrate the fact that you were there.
And birth is not easy for the baby either. Their heads change shape. It was the mother who had some choice in the matter.
