Our democracy is undervalued, it would seem, because so few of the people are voting. And the number of people who are not registered to vote is staggering. What's going on?

Want me to be Honest? You sit back and wait for the population to Vote. In Australia, we are fined if we do not Vote. Guess it gives a kick up the pants to anyone that doesn't. Our total Vote is around 97%. Guess you should give it a try.

I've been watching the answers and can't quite figure it out;

- my vote doesn't count
- I don't like anyone
- I've got a sore big toe

What a lame bunch of excuses for not soing something you should be proud of. People around the world are willing to DIE to vote, but good old USA is too lazy. Vote for the one you dislike the least if you ahve to, but VOTE.

And while you're at it, take back the process from big money - but the only way you can do that is to get active - but thats work - and its so much easier to sit back & whinge.

I have made it to most elections in the last 30+ years however I can say where I am now, during a high turn out you can wait in line over an hour plus. Add that to a 1 1/2 hour comute to and from work, plus the options to vote for. It can wear a soul down. Still too many are just too lazy to get out and vote.

we're not really a democracy. The two party system has effectively locked out all other candidates from participating in the process. The last time a viable 3rd party candidate was included (Perot) he did too well and they locked him out for the rest of the debates and effectively took him out of contention.

Why aren't all of the partys included in the televised debates? Why is a job that makes $400,000 worth selling your soul for, and spending $1billion to get?

people don't vote because the candidates are all the same, narcissists that have an agenda that isn't the same as the rest of the countrys'.

Ron Paul for President

Truth..Politics! Our vote doesn't count.. Elections are won before they begin.. and not just for President...
Also, the bills regarding City and State.. For Example: You will hear "come out and Vote" to pass a School Bond..or something... They create this great picture of Teachers getting raises, additional teachers being hired to reduce class sizes, children getting new books-etc...you get the picture..

What happens is...In this "Bond" or "Measure" that know-one reads, just the politicians benefiting..there are sometime hundreds of thousands of dollars tucked away- in "hidden bonds or measures -within the one proposed"

Therefore on a bond THE PEOPLE come to vote on..in this example... Teachers may get (1) new teacher for the year, but School Administrators will see sometime up to a 40% PAY RAISE, each one... and then all the $$ allocated in those "hidden bonds" have nothing to do with the school--or helping...It's for politicians to get richer..

Well- Apply this seniro to ALL elections my dear...Now you see why american's don't give a rat's A**... Your vote means nothing..

Watch Michael Moore's 911 (blockbuster, hollywood or most video rentals have it)... You will see how Mr. GW became President... It sure wasn't our vote!

The system is set up in such a way as to encourage a self-serving stagnant and parasitic governing body whose only purpose is to remain in power while still grabbing all the loot they can. The 'two parties' are actually one party, dividing up the bad ideas into two equal halves. We only get to select which direction in which we want to erode our once great nation, and even then the politicians change their minds once they get into office.

edit: i offered no solutions; how 'bout voting on issues, rather than on people?

then we would know the true meaning of "tyranny of the majority"

No one worth voting for.
How come you force democracy on others but don't embrace it yourselves.
The communists didn't force their views on as many countries as you have.
You only accept democracy if the vote goes the way you want otherwise you overthrow the government. Why not clean up your own back yard first.

I know it's a crying shame, isn't it? However, I think that the Presidential campaign 2008 will see a whole different story this time around....I gather there will be a HUGE turn out at the polls come next year!!! Just wait and see! "Baby, You ain't seen nothin' yet!"

There are lots of excuses, but I think the main reason people do not vote is they have always had the privilege to vote so they take it for granted and don't appreciate its importance.

People think their vote won't make a difference.

Of course, after Florida in 2000, people are starting to rethink that notion.
