texas actually leans democrat, but because of gerrymandering, it is nearly impossible for the dems to win the state, just like the republicans would never win cal.

Assuming the GOP puts up someone decent and the Dems put up Hillary, I think that you will see a similar election map like we've seen in the past.
Depending on the GOP candidate though different states could be important. If Romney is either the VP or the Pres candidate, it's quite possible that Michigan would flip and vote for the GOP this year and win the election for them.
So I'm going with Michigan.

Actually Texas used to lean Democratic (I grew up there). Most state-wide offices are now held by Republicans who have won by solid majorities. The problem in Texas is not gerrymandering (though you do have some of that), but the realignment of conservatives into the Republican party.
I am not seeing this election as being particularly close. If Giuliani is the Republican nominee, one-third of the Republican Party sits out the election. If Giuliani is not the nominee, the Republicans will have trouble competing for moderate votes. One year is a long-time in politics, but I am seeing 1996-type margins.

I see it this way: The Democrats won't lose a single state they carried in 2004. And they'll pick up Ohio, and probably New Mexico, Iowa, and possibly Nevada and Florida too. Colorado and even Virginia could also be in play for the Democrats.
