If you are supposed to rinse them off, then why are you supposed to put more detergent in for pots and pans?

OK, I just learned this. You are supposed to knock off any clumps of food, but do not actually rinse all the food off. The detergent is an alkaline substance, the food is an acid substance. The detergent won't work well unless their is food residue to react to the detergent. So...I've been using dishwashers for 25 years and I never heard this before. I've been doing a bunch of work for nothing!!!

Also, the powder detergent is for hard water areas and the gel is for soft water areas. Wrong detergent, less effective results!! Live and learn, huh? :)

Rule #1: Mom is always right. If Mom is wrong, see Rule #1!!! Always!!! I don't bother rinsing the dishes that go into the dishwasher except if they have egg or milk on them. I use a soft rubber scraper and get most of the food off into the trash. I do know people tho, who not only scrape the dishes, but wash and rinse them before putting them into the dishwasher!!! BTW: Plumbers cost around $50 per hour and that is at the apprentice level!!! the master is outrageous!!!

Most of the modern dish washers can handle really dirty dishes. There is no need for rinsing dishes before putting them in the dish washer. Doing so is just wasting water and not environmental friendly. I never rinse and also i do not put the non-stick pots and pans in the dishwasher.

I always rinse my dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. I never do my pots and pans in the dishwasher.

Yes, I rinse. It helps your dishwasher not get so clogged with food particles, and saves wear and tear on it. (Which means it will last a lot longer--not to mention smell better!)

The detergent you use in a dishwasher is designed to dissolve food and is actually pretty caustic stuff. You most likely should put more in for pots and pans simply because food gets cooked in (and thus cooked ON to) the pots and pans and may require extra detergent to dissolve it.

Hope this helps!

ALL THE TIME, by habit, and because I'm not always sure how long they will just sit there before I have a full-load to run.
No matter which dishwashing soap I've used - if you have stuck on food - none of them do a good job of getting everything off.

Probably because the food gets more stuck on these things then on regular dishes. I would definatly rinse first though, even for sink washing.

I wasn't aware that you had to put more detergent, but there maybe more surface area on pots and pans versus that of regular plates and dishes.

No I usually don't unless it's really really bad! I use Cascade tabs and they work great at getting the dishes clean.
