I know they kill anyone who opposes big government but is there any more specific group of people? Probably religious people?

It depends on which communists you mean, one of the easiest mistakes to make is using only a single model for communism. Russia, China, Cambodia, or Cuba, all have different methods and agendas. Some purges were of ethnic groups, recent immigrants, gypsies, jews, civil servants, urban dwellers, industrial managers, military officers, doctors, school teachers, religious sects, kulaks, peasants, mechants, professionals, and/or the secret police. Pretty hard to find a group that hasn't been the target of at least one group of communists, somehwere.

One universal seems to be killing other communists. Like all revolutions, the bloodiest purges are of those closest to the purgers, the ones in contention for power.

Communism is a political philosophy. Some governments that have done awful things were communist governments... but that doesn't mean all communists do awful things.

But yes, communist governments, in the early days of their "revolution" wanted to rid themselves of people who had the intelligence and means to undermine the revolution. This included political dissidents, intelligentsia, teachers, lawyers/judges etc.

These are the results of bad interpretations of what is a political philosophy that truly loves people, almost as much as Anarchism. It's like people who follow the bible calling for the nuclear annihilation of Muslims - good book - bad interpretation.

There is a book titled "The Black Book of Communism" which explored the various Communist regimes and their victims. The common victims were the bourgeoisie class, peasants resistant to collectivization, opposition socialists, and Christian theologians.
In the Soviet Union the largest class of victims were peasants opposed to collectivization. The numbers are in the millions of those killed or imprisoned.
