From what I understand of the Vietnam war, after Congress de-funded it, over 2 million Cambodians were slaughtered. I do not wish a result like this for Iraq, and do not see how we could leave and expect a different result for Iraq.

Interesting question. I was in Viet Nam in 1968-69 - a volunteer, no less.
Obviously, I supported the war effort - at the time it seemed very reasonable to me that stopping the spread of communism was in America's best interest. Most people don't realize that the South Viet Namese government didn't fall until AFTER the troops were prematurely pulled out. The TET offensive was, militarily, a miserable failure for the North Viet Namese - but unfortunately, it was a resounding public relations victory for the anti-war zealots in this country.
The Iraq war has really little or no parallel to Viet Nam - we were brutally attacked on 9/11 by an ideology of hatred and domination - no specific country, no organized and uniformed enemy, no front lines, no vital targets to destroy, etc...etc....
The terrorists have indiscriminately slaughtered thousands of people with pretty much impunity over the last 25 years as the world sat on the side lines.
We may be on the wrong battle field - we have made mistakes and the costs have been great - but I am damned proud that the United States and her true allies have finally confronted these fanatical psychos. They can no longer carry out their blood lust tactics against innocent people with impunity - there will be serious consequences, as there should be.

I assumed that America was right by being in Vietnam when I was a kid. As I became an adult, I realized that it was a total waste of life. As an adult, I saw it as a stupid mistake of arrogant people in Washington who just had to try to dominate the world.
I was all for the invasion of Iraq until it became clear that it was based on lies. What WMD's? They lied when they said that Sadamn was trying to get materials for a "dirty bomb." (One with radioactive materials.)
History shows that the "Gulf of Tonkin" incident where North Vietnam supposedly attacked a U.S. Navy ship was also a lie to have an excuse to send in thousands of troops. Well 58,000 dead Americans and 2 million dead Vietnamese later, what have we got to show for it except Vietnamese immigrants and some manufacturing jobs going to Vietnam. PLUS huge reproductive damage to th Vietnamese people from agent Orange and agent blue. plus the residual chemicals from the bombs. Then there are the land mines that people are still stepping on. We LOST the Vietnam war America. We were not on the wrong side, we WERE the wrong side. The French got their asses kicked also in Vietnam while being funded by America. The powers that be in Washington KNEW that the Vietnam war could not be won way back in 1964 or 65 but yet they went on with it, just read the then secretary of defense's (Robert S. McNamara's) statements in his book
In 30 years and a zillion dollars later, we will look back on the war in Iraq and feel so stupid for letting it go on year after year. LET IRAQ DEAL WITH IT'S OWN CIVIL WAR! LET THE MIDDLE EAST FIGHT AMONG THEMSELVES OR WORK OUT THEIR OWN PROBLEMS. Our love affair with big gas guzzling SUV's and the oil it takes to make that gasoline is why we are there in Iraq, along with the fact that defense contractors are getting filthy rich. Other governments, even some in the Middle East, own stock in our defense contractor companies so they, (our possible enemies) are making money on the deal also.

I do support this war. I was not old enough to support or not support the Viet Nam war. I know from History class that the government interfered with the running of the war instead of letting the military leaders lead.

I wish people would quit mistaking supporting the war for supporting the troops.
Only a closed minded individual cannot see the difference.

No one likes war, there has always been war at some point. I support my country, all the military and their missions, period. "Unnecessary", and you know this because, that is what the biggest conspiracy has been about now for a few years. I support my country , period.

Yes, the war in Vietnam was righteous and just, the majority of Americans were too weak to see it through though.

Once the decision has been made to place troops in harms way, there is no alternative but to support them. PERIOD!
