I use to use a filter, but my fish would get stuck in it. Is there a more convenient way to oxygenate the water without air tubing and pumps? I have a 5 gallon tank with a small goldfish in it.

go to the fish store and ask for oxygen tablets to put oxygen in the water.

what many dont know is a majority of the oxygen that is in the water comes from the surface, so you will need something dissrupting the surface, i would say use a filter i have had many breeding fish still have the fry survive even though the filter is on. You can get a straw and blow air into the tank for a little while every hour or so, or change the water (like a gallon or so) every day. The last option is do nothing, i had a convict chiclid that grew to 6in before i gave it away (took about 6months), and it had no filter, no air bubbles, no pumbs, no water changes, so... how did he survive well most fish will go to the surface for air, if they need it. Hope this helps

Go back to the filter as this will provide the best water circulation and oxygenation. There should be a strainer that goes on the tube where the water is pulled from the tank. If the spaces on the strainer are still wide enough apart that fish are being caught, put a sponge filter or piece of an old nylon stocking over the end.

Eventually, you're going to need a larger tank for your fish - even fancy goldfish will get to 4-10 inches, and common types will get over 10 inches. You should have at least 15-20 gallons by the time your fish is an adult.

First of all, you are going to need AT LEAST a ten gallon for the goldfish for now. They grow big and they need 20 gallons each when fully grown. My eldest goldfish is 2 years old and recently reached 9 inches. He's still growing, too. Most people say commons (sold as feeders) only reach 6 inches, but in most cases they do get larger. You never know until they are done growing, which can take awhile.
Fancies stay smaller (only about 5-6 inches) and they need 10 gallons per fish.

The best way to oxygenate a small bowl is with a small air-stone and mini bubbler.
You can't really oxygenate it any other way unless you want to stand over the bowl and scoop up water and pour it back in continously.
Seeing as it's a goldfish, you might want to check into a small under-gravel filter. Other wise you will need to clean it out every other day or he will get ammonia poisoning.

Keep using the air filter and pump, go to the hardware store or wal-mart and buy a disposable air conditioner filter, there usually black and sponge like and very thin(cost maybe 4 dollars), cut off a strip that fits the length and height of your air tub and secure it with tiny plastic tie bands and cut off the excess to make it look neat. they'll never get sucked into it again. When it gets too dirty, replace it with another piece.

they sell air pumps, tubes and air stones (bubble making) the pump is outside the tank,, the tube runs the air to the stone and it bubbles and oxygenates!!

you could get an air stone with an air pump. They make cool little treasure chests and such that bubble also if you put an air pump to it.

Use oxygen tablets, they will work. That or blow air through a staw once in a while (definately not conveniant)!

A air pump is really good. They have them at petsmart and petco.

The only thing left is oxygen tabs and I wouldn't recommend them in a 5 gal. tank.
