10800 liters per day
500 ml X 15 breaths/minute x 60 minutes/hour x 24 hours/day

Assuming these values vary with the age and height of the person; the values that follow are for a 70 kg (154 lb), average-sized adult male taking the average of between 10 and 20 breaths per minute with an averge lung capactity of an average weight and height and at an average altitude of only a few feet above sea level.

There are a huge number of variables to take in account, how much oxygen is present per breath at a specific alititude, the weight, height, age, sex, and physical health of the person in question and the amount of air that is acutally exchanged NOT the amount of air that the lungs can hold; which would yeild a higher number. Instead I used an average human lung tidal volume of 500 ml at a breath rate between 10 and 20 breaths per minute with 60 minutes per hour and 24 hours per day.

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_lung
"Total lung capacity (TLC) includes inspiratory reserve volume, tidal volume, expiratory reserve volume, and residual volume. The total lung capacity depends on the person's age, height, weight, sex, and normally ranges between 4,000 and 6,000 cm3 (4 to 6 L). For example, females tend to have a 20–25% lower capacity than males. Tall people tend to have a larger total lung capacity than shorter people. Smokers have a lower capacity than nonsmokers. Lung capacity is also affected by altitude. People who are born and live at sea level will have a smaller lung capacity than people who spend their lives at a high altitude. In addition to the total lung capacity, one also measures the tidal volume, the volume breathed in with an average breath, about 500 cm3. For a detailed discussion of the various lung volumes, see the article on lung volumes....

Typical resting adult respiratory rates are 10–20 breaths per minute with 1/3 of the breath time in inspiration"

According to Wikipedia:
"The average pair of human lungs can hold about 6 liters of air, but only a small amount of this capacity is used during normal breathing. Lung volumes refer to physical differences in volume, while lung capacities represent different combinations of lung volumes, usually in relation to respiration and exhalation.

Breathing mechanism in mammals is called "tidal breathing". Tidal breathing means that air goes into the lungs the same way that it comes out....

Average Human lung tidal volume = 500 ml measured The amount of air breathed in or out during normal respiration. The volume of air an individual is normally breathing in and out. "
