How was that experience? Do you think it helped you or did you just dislike it? I think I really, really, really need to go see one...I'm going through extremely tough times and developing bad coping habits...what would be a good way to tell an overprotective, pretty closed-mined mom this without her getting mad and freaking out? (She's the type that thinks everything should be kept within the family.)

Oh...I've started with the school counselor. I don't really like going to her. I feel as though she's not really LISTENING and looking at things from my point of view and she just doesn't come off as friendly.

Therapy is better than drugs. See a psychologist over a psychiatrist. And yes, you do need to work on your coping skills. I'm glad you understand that is an area you are having problems in. Most people don't even think about that. And my mom just simply refused to let me when I was little. If you really want to help yourself, check out psychology books at the library about the issues you feel are bothering you. A few hours of study a day may be more helpful than paying $60-$150 or more an hour once a month to see a therapist.

I have been seeing a therapist for several months and it has been working. I get angry at people who still have that extremely outdated attitude that therapy is only for wackos and everybody else keeps everything closed within a family system. Please be true to yourself!

my parents made me go see one after we moved...I wasn't "depressed" or anything but they knew it was tough on me...the therapist did really help me...it was free though so thats good lol...I don't feel comfortable talking to anyone about my feelings...it was just awkward - that was the only time I went...
