because teens dont know themselves yet so if they are in a certain "clique" they feel safe and secure because they feel like they actually belong somewhere. its weird, but thats how I was

It's just the natural way of things. People like to hang out with people they have things in common with- it's easier for them to relate to each other, and they can enjoy doing activities together. That's why cliques form. The social pecking order forms because the largest clique becomes the majority and then any other groups that do things differently are considered "abnormal". When you're a kid, abnormal is considered bad (I can't explain that one, but it happens) so then the cliques start making fun of each other. And the lower order cliques make fun of upper order cliques too, it's not a one-way thing; nerds and goths make fun of preps, they just do it in the privacy of their own social circle because doing it as openly as the majority clique does it would cause alot of unwanted harassment.

It's unfortunate but it makes sense and it's really never going to change.

I think it's a way for people to be with others that share common interests. It's not right to call people mean names, but some people do like the chess club or math club or something. But it's not just with teens. Adults do it too! There are different groups (cliques) that people hang out with. It's just human nature. That's what I think.

Teenagers are really weird, and lots of them have a lack of self confidence. So many are afraid to let their walls down and be their own selves, so instead conform to everyone else, like a safezone. What we need is more self-love, and the desire to be our own person. I think it's more beneficial to find yourself and not let others get under your skin. You'll have less regrets if your always yourself and not someone who is a follower. I think it's really important to have friends from all different cliques, and have an open mind. Today's society doesnt do the best with this--just like many of the teens in highschool.

It has always been that way. Why? Why do trends and fads start, why does everybody want to dress or look the same way? Its just an urge to belong to a group of people you admire. Some of it is generated by advertising. Advertisers can identify certain teens that are trend setters for everybody else, and if they can motivate those trend setters to take up whatever they are selling it is a very effective way to move product. Jeans, shoes, accessories, shirts, personal products, beverages...boys see a guy who they want to be like so they do what he is doing, girls the same way. He is so cool I wish I was like him so I will do what he does. Advertisers love to find those trend setters.

i'm a teen. I think that we do this because we are still trying to figure things out. and we like to organize it in the form of cliques. i guess it's easier for us to see. We make fun of other cliques because of our differences.

By we i mean we, teenagers. I don't mean me. i hate the idea of cliques and i dont' make fun of anyone

It is stupid. The blondes are dumb, the jocks are into themselves, the people who wear black are goth....yeah right! These are dumb stereotypes. Though everyone has stereotyped once in a while, most people know to look past them. But some don't and just assume that a certain group is a certain way, and stereotype because they think they are being funny. >:(

Well, a lot of what you think and how you want to be classified is communicated through how you present yourself. People tend to dress like their friends and who they admire. Teenagers especially define themselves by what they wear. So, if someone who's head-to-toe in A&F doesn't automatically become buddy-buddy with the kid who tries to go grunge, that's the reason.

it's because during that teenage stage, everybody wants to try and portray themselves or find themselves. so they go around and joining all these cliques in hope to act a certain way.

they want to be associated with being liked, and being popular and etc.....

more or less, they are just brain washed zombies trying to find themselves throughout the adolescent stages.
