and is anyone else more than a little disturbed by the overwhelming response and proactive measures being taken in Santa Monica, compared with the lack of assistance or preparation in New Orleans? I mean, I'm all for learning from our mistakes, but I have a sneaking suspicion that doesn't have as much to do with it as I would like.

and to clarify, i'm not crying racism. you know they say the only color that matters is green, and people in SoCal have a lot more money than people in the 9th Ward.

Why would you even compare this to Katrina?

It is devastating and the fires have displaced more than a half a million people already, with no end in sight.

I am really sick of all the other states implying that all So Cal people are rich. Have you ever thought that most of us work our tails off to have what we have and to live in a beautiful place. Even though it's not so beautiful at the moment as we are filled with smoke and ash. Where else can you go to the beach to surf on Christmas and turn around and see snow on the mountains?

If you really want to compare the two, try this on for size. Every year at this time we get Santa Ana winds, we all know the consequences of wild fires. The fire departments are prepared and frankly most people know they may have to go and have a plan in place. I know I have a plan, I know what I am taking and where I am going.

So to be quite frank, So Cal isn't learning from the mistakes of Katrina, they prepare every year for wild fires in September and October. Money has nothing to do with it. Right now even if you are a millionaire, does it matter! If your house has burned down, you have lost everything and have to start over, money doesn't make the pain any less!

I just wish everyone outside of California would get off their high horses and shutup! If you aren't living it, then don't make any snide remarks or offer your negative opinions about California!

To the responders who say no you can't compare it, then follow that statement by saying how many people are displaced and how devastating the fires are, are you serious? So are you implying that people weren't displaced and devastation wasn't the result of the hurricane? keep in mind, New Orleans wasn't the only city affected, that entire area of the Gulf was a disaster zone. A hurricane is just as much a natural disaster as a fire.
As to preparation, hurricanes hit the gulf every year. People have hurricane shutters, evacuation centers on higher ground, hello what do you call levees? But Katrina was bigger and stronger than they could have prepared for. Just like the weather conditions and the fires are bigger and stronger than usual.
And as to the people of SoCal being somehow 'better' than the people in New Orleans, like any major city, New Orleans has it's nice parts and it's slums. The reason the people from the slums got so much publicity is because they didn't have the means to evacuate like the wealthier people, so they got left behind.

No not really, first Katrina was a hurricane going on tell we how would you stop the hurricane while it is going on huh. A fire is workable maybe you think they should wait until everything burns down then react. It is still going on honey and things are still burning. They are trying to stop it like they do with any fire everywhere even if it was in New Orleans.
Do you have the ability to think or do you just babble,
New Orleans is a welfare city nothing has worked there for years and people always waited for others to take care of them. Even with all the money that was sent there for Katrine the people expect some else to do for them.
No one in So Ca was prepared for this fire but they won't sit around and wait for our inept government to rebuild it either. That is the other difference.

Katrina destroyed a lot more than just my city of New Orleans; look at the entire Gulf Coast from west Louisiana to Alabama. Yes, watching all of this is bringing back memories of those weeks after Katrina. I watch the helicopters dropping water on the fires, and I notice that no one is shooting at them. I see throngs of people fill Qualcom Stadium and I am amazed that no one is tearing the place apart, or looting, or fighting over food and water. It is not just the response of officials to the disaster; it is the response of the residents that I find so dramatically different.

So what do you suggest? That Southern California be allowed to burn to atone for the mistakes made during Katrina?
