They change up their normal routine and they develope strange interests that don't seem right. They start smelling better, dressing better and act like they are anxiously trying to leave to go some place or they try to cover up their excitement too much. It's all pretty obvious actually.

The only way to know, without your spouse telling you, is to catch him.
If you don't catch him .. then you will never know for positive.
Just catch him.
If you can't afford a Private Investigator, there are several other things to check out.
First, never-never-never let him know that you are suspicious of anything. Give him ALL the space he needs .. but not so much that he gets suspicious.
If he does NOT think that you are "on" to him at all .. he will not be as careful.
NEVER accuse him. CATCH HIM.
There has to be reasons why you think he is running around. Is he doing things differently? .. as in habits, etc.
You will need to take note of everything .. to be able to put the peaces together at a later date.
Do you think he is having an on-going affair?...or do you think he had a one night stand? There is a big difference. An on-going affair will happen again, and again.
You need to have an idea of WHO it could be. Consider someone at work? .. or someone he met elsewhere? .. an old love. You need to have some sort of an idea.
Do you have any idea WHEN he is doing it? Is he staying late for work? Is he having unsual habits that he never had before? Knowing the times that he is NOT home - but should be home .. will be the times that you will eventually know to check. One thing - if he IS having an affair - he might contact you, to see exactly where you are -- so he will be safe.

follow your heart.you already know if you have solid ground.but one of the sign is he buys new under ware and he had no explanation for lost time check out credit card statements go Thur his cell phone bill the list is endless.If you were cheating where would you state to hide stuff//

My spouse? I would just look for the obvious signs and be wise enough not to ignore them.

dont ignore the signs. they will be there. dont make a single excuse for him. if you are that unsure then have a friend he doesnt know try to folow him at a time when you think he is going to cheat.

changes in personality, coming home or working late,if you have a joint bank account look for missing money, check his phone calls ,not wanting to have sex

ever heard of a "woman's instinct"?...then you gonna have to trust your own instinct...you will know, you can feel if he is really cheating on you...unless you are in denial.....
