e) Repression.

The other defense mechanisms are superstructures (ie: additional constructs) to the original repression.

First you repress the thing, then you develop a way to avoid the fact that you are repressing (pass it off, do something else, retreat from the issue... etc).and this leads to other issues/problems (sort of like telling one lie, then another to cover the first one.... when does it end?)
