Isolation and the hours of work one needs to bring in an income.
It used to be most of the family would work together and this created bonds.
Now each family memeber is isolated. The kids got their own world at school, the father is working over time again to pay the bills, the mother is left at home (mine was now that is not the case.) and everyone is a stranger to each other in their own homes.
The hours put in at work are bad too. When my father worked 12 hour shifts every day at a power plant, that when he brought the stress home and the arguments began. That when the family began to fall apart.

The reasons are different in every situation. But I'm not sure if a "change" is always a "break down." Very often, these changes are because people are trying to get out of an unhappy situation and are better off afterwards.

Women in the work force. The fact that 52% of marriages end in divorce in this Country are the 2 main factors. Law changes where if you look at your kids crosseyed someone will turn you in for child abuse is right up there also.

During what time period?
My guess, based on what I know - scientific and economic advancements. Now that there are doctors, families don't have to take care of each other as much in times of illness... now that kids don't have to help with family farming work, they're not at home as much...etc
