For being a younger teen girl (I'm assuming you are?) you most definitely want to start with petites or slims (sometimes also called lights). It is hard to get something up there the first few times. So you want to start small, even if it means changing a few extra times during the day.

Trust me, once I ran out of slims, and used a regular one, and it hurt because my vagina was simply not big enough. It hurt pretty badly too.

As for your first brand, I use Tampax Pearl with the plastic applicators, which I like, but I have also heard really good things about Playtex Sport.

Whatever you do, make sure you have your mom or someone else close to you in the bathroom while you do it, to show you how. It can be a little tricky.

Good luck! :)

The best kind of tampon is the one you decide works best for you. There are the sort with a cardboard tube for insertion, which let you flush it all away. There are the type with a plastic tapered applicator, which is slightly easier to place for some folks, but of course- can't be flushed, and as plastic isn't biodegradable and "green". Then there are the sort without any sort of applicator at all, and you must use your fingers to insert them. Those are good if you are comfortable with the idea of touching yourself, and are willing to wash your hands before and after insertion. You will want to choose the lightest sort to absorb your flow as you reasonably can, so you want a selection of absorbancys, from a light to a super, and choose which to use according to the amount of flow you experience. You also probably want to use a panty liner as emergency backup- tampons do leak on occasion, or get saturated before you realize it. And if you are a virgin with an intact hymen, you may have problems inserting them at first, or may not be able to at all. In this case, it's best to choose a slender variety, with a plastic applicator, if you can. Your first few tries will be rather clumsy, and you should plan to use most of the first box in the learning process. If it's not comfortable, and you can feel it- it's not in right. Just remove it with a tug of the string and bear down, and try again. The packages come with inserts with suggestions for positions to use when inserting, and most have web sites with the information as well. They all work pretty much the same, one isn't really any better than another. The only thing you don't need is the deoderant sort. Bacteria cause odor in pads, but not in tampons because it's not open to the air. And you will be changing them frequently enough for that not to be an issue hopefully. The deoderant is just a selling ploy, playing on fears. Nobody is going to be sniffing there anyway- so there's no need to deoderize things with a stick-up. It just irritates the tissues. Other than that, simply pick one you'd like to try and give it a go. Try other brands as you like, until you find a type you prefer, and then stick with that. Sorry, but there just isn't one kind that's better than another. They all have points in their favor and points that are not, and you just have to find which you like best.

It really depends on your preference.

The biggest decision is whether to use one with an applicator or without. If you're comfortable with your body, you can use applicator-free tampons and they are better for the environment because there is no applicator to throw in the trash. OB brand is the most common brand of applicator-free tampons.

Some people will recommend unbleached tampons, which you can usually only buy at natural foods/health stores. Many people have the opinion that since there are fewer chemicals used to bleach the tampons, it is better for your body. They are also better for the environment because there are fewer chemicals used during the manufacturing process.

It's really about figuring out what works for you. If this is your first time using tampons, you might want to start with a "light" tampon because they are a bit smaller. Tampons can be tricky to use the first couple of times, but you'll get used to them! You also might want to use a pantiliner as a backup.

Good luck!

My personal preference is Kotex products. They have a wide variety of sizes, and absorbency's. They also have plastic applicators for their tampons which really makes inserting them a breeze. Stay away from cardboard tampons - they're likely to ruin the whole tampon experience.
Good luck

First of all, Tampons are not good for you at all, they keep all the bad bacteria up inside of you. Plus, they can cause other infections, take it from someone who knows, I was advised by my OB/Gyn, never to use tampons, you can also get Toxic ShockSyndrome and that IS NOT FUN
